Taster at Australian beer festival. Red/brown beer with solid white head. Nose has chocolate and cocoa. Laces well. Taste is surprisingly bitter, as is the lingering finish. A bit of deception, looks and smells like a brown ale. Tastes like an IPA (with chocolate!). Well made and fun.

Pint on tap at Basement Brewhouse, Bankstown. As Shark Island Lager. 4.6%. Pale amber beer with thin white head. Laces well. High carbonation. Nose of sweet malt. Zingy and grainy with subdued bitter finish. Malt background throughout. Good lager with lots of flavour.

330ml bottle into tulip. Pours a hazy orange/amber with solid fluffy white head. Medium carbonation. Distant whiffs of earthy hops retreat behind caramel malt. Slight zing, light body. Has earth, grass, resin, quinine in the short finish. As an APA against the American hop-monsters it’s nowhere, BUT as a pale ale against the current ’Aussie Pale’ attempts it pulls no punches. Full of flavour, it’s good.

330ml bottle into shaker. Hazy amber beer with thin solid white head. Aroma of lime and white bread. Mouthfeel is flat but full bodied. No real taste at first but the finish is mildly citric leading to bitter lemon. Has a subtle malt background for balance. Good thoughtful beer.

330ml bottle into schooner glass. Nose is citrus and pepper. Golden beer with thin film on top, lots of bubbles. Slight haze. Light bodied, fruity bitter taste. Finish is long with mild floral hops, bitter lemon and late late ’Juicy Fruit’. Excellent thirst quencher, well balanced. More flavour than I expected from a golden ale.
