Sample at Barley’s Smokehouse. This election-season beer is a hazy yellow color with a thin and foamy bone white head that recedes quickly. Stringy lacing. Aroma of astringent hops and bananas. Light-bodied with an harsh hops and yeast flavor that makes me wonder if there was an infection. The finish is sharp hops and sweet fruit. Not very enjoyable on any level. Ironically this beer is about as successful as the target of its namesake.

Sample at Barley’s Smokehouse. This beer is a hazy orange-yellow color with a medium foamy white head that diminishes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of raspberries and musty malt. Light body with a tart raspberry character. Flavors of mild yeast and spices in the background. The finish is tart and fruity with a short-lived raspberry aftertaste. Not a bad beer, but as a first attempt at a Belgian it is clear Barley’s has a little more work to do.

On nitro draught at the Smokehouse. The beer pours dark brown with a medium light brown head that dissipates steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. The aroma is roasty with notes of coffee, malt and hops. Medium, silky smooth body with a roasted character. Coffee and dark chocolate dominate, with notes of hops in the background. The finish is roasty with a lingering coffee aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

On draught at the Smokehouse. This brew is a hazy yellow-orange color with a thin and foamy off-white head that dissipates steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass. Spicy hops aroma with some straw and malt. Medium-bodied and moderately bitter with hops, citrus and spice flavors supported by a mildly malty base. The finish is citrusy hops with a lightly spiced aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

On draught at Barley’s Smokehouse. This brew pours a clear dark golden color with a medium thin bone white head that has decent retention. Thin rings of lacing. The aroma is caramel and earthy malt wuth a touch of hops. Light, clean body with flavors of malt, citrus and mild hops. The finish is fruity with a light hops aftertaste. Decent overall.

On draught at the Smokehouse last weekend. The beer pours a hazy dark copper color with a medium beige head that diminishes steadily. Thin rings of lacing. Aroma of earthy malt, citrus and hops. Medium body with flavors of bready malt and citrusy hops, with light smoke and spice in the background. The finish is moderately bitter hops that linger awhile. Barley’s does not seem to do blends very often, and I am not sure if this beer is an argument for or against them attempting it again. Overall this is an interesting beer but not one that would be at the top of my list on future visits.

Shared by Dickinsonbeer, I believe via a handbottle (thanks, Paul!) - clear copper beer, with a soapy lace - smells of roasted malts and corn syrup, with very faint earthy character that was so hard to make out it may well have been my imagination - really sweet, with strong burnt sugar, roasted malts, a bit of nuttiness - some corn syrup, diacetyl, and phenolics throughout - this would not go well with my haggis at all.

On draught at the Smokehouse. This beer pours a lightly murky golden amber color with a medium and foamy off-white head that has decent retention. Patchy lacing on the glass. The aroma is moderately hoppy with notes of citrus and sweet fruit. Medium-bodied and zesty with hops and citrus flavors backed by a sweet malt base. The finish is clean and alternatively fruity and hoppy. The mildly bitter hops aftertaste sticks around for awhile as well. Above average all around, although of the 2 beers so far that are thumbing their noses at the hops shortage, I liked the Hop Envy a little better.

On draught at the Smokehouse. The beer is a clear amber color with a thin off-white head that burns away to nothing fairly quickly. Thin top ring of lacing on the glass with nothing underneath. Mild hops and pale malt aroma. Light-bodied and mildly sweet with toasted malt and caramel flavors, along with a hint of hops. The finish is sweet with a short malt and fruit aftertaste. Overall this beer is below par for Barley’s, and is not really a good homage to the last person burned at the stake in England.

Medium-bodied with a solid caramel malt character that props up a moderate amount of hops. The finish is sweet caramel and malt at first with a lingering hoppiness left behind. Pretty good.
