This team of owner-operators was formed shortly after the group realized they all were after the same thing, just in different parts of the province. Brewer John Folinsbee was planning a brewery in Squamish, industry veteran Marc Roberts had his sights on Vancouver while entrepreneur Ben Reeder and builder Adam Steinberg were looking at brewing in the Cowichan Valley on Reeder’s hop farm. After tasting John’s recipes they decided to go all in and combine forces to build the 6000 square foot brewery, tasting room and kitchen in Squamish.

Dark brown. Just a thin head. Deep dark fruitcake aroma. The palate is intense - all those dates and figs and maybe some cherries. Sultanas. Light brown sugar. Vanilla bourbon elements. The base stout gets rounded out so much by the treatments - all harshness is subdued and only the rich flavour notes remain. Low carbo lends a further impression of smoothness. Alcohol splash in the finish, just enough bitterness. This is layered, complex, beautiful stout.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Black colour, with brown head. Aroma of nuts, spirit, marzipan. Full bodied, sweet, chocolate, roasted nuts, and warming alcohol; it's bold, but not what I would call rich, and it's somehow out of balance.

2024-02-23, can, 1 year old, 9-4-9-4-18=44
Drinking side to side with the 2021 release, this one has darker chocolate flavour, which is a better character, alcohol is more balanced, more coconut. Great.

2022-12-10, can from The Gull, North Vancouver, 8-4-9-4-17=42
Dark brown colour, near black, no head. The arom ais dominated by the dark chocolate, cacao, and alcohol. Full bodied, sweet; it starts with brown sugar, then caramel, breadcrust, burnt sugar, chocolate, toasted coconut, vanilla; there is some malt acidity, and rum.
It's fairly complex, and satisfying.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Black colour, no head. Aroma of dark chocolate, light vanilla, light coffee, petrol. Full bodied, some burnt sugar flavour, chocolate, light tar, Bourbon; it's a bit too boozy.
Good, but there's no elegance here; I wouldn't pay the highest price from Backcountry to date for this beer again.

16oz shared with Ryan @ Alex's. Appearance: dark brown with a dark beige head. Aroma: nice and rich rum barrel with some spice and fruits. Reminded me Citizen Cane. Taste: along the same lines, lots of rum barrel, moderately sweet, some molasses. Overall: pretty good.

Poured from 473mL can. Near black with minimal tan head. Mild rum character, mild vanilla, feint dark fruit, hint of chocolate. Decent.

16oz shared with Ryan @ Alex's. Appearance: dark brown with a quickly disappeared beige head that revealed coconut flakes flowing on top. Aroma: lots of nice espresso, chocolate, coconut, barrel. Reminds me a lot of the original KTCYFA with BBA Modern Times coffee. Taste: along the same lines, multiple-layered beer. Overall: very nice.
