IT TAKES A VILLAGE
Some of the best things happen over beer. Ideas are born, friendships forged, deals struck, communities built. That’s how Village Brewery began, friends sharing beers and dreams. Around the table, we had close to a century and a half of brewing experience. One of us was a legendary Canadian brewmaster. Naturally the talk turned to the art and craft of better beer, then to secret sources of malts and hops. By last call we had dreamed up a true community brewery. A brewery that would support Calgary’s artists and craftspeople. A brewery that would create the excellent ales and lagers our friends and neighbors deserve. That talk over beer started the brewery that handcrafted the fine brew you hold in your hand. Please join our table, lift a pint and salute the Village of Calgary. It takes a Village to raise a beer. And a beer to raise a Village.

A dark reddish copper brown ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet caramel malt with off notes, herbaceous hops, so-so. In mouth, sweet caramel malt with light grassy hops, light mineral notes, light herbaceous character. On tap at Festibière de Gatineau été 2017.

A golden ale with a thin lacing off white head. In aroma, sweet grainy malt with light grassy hops, light herbaceous character, OK. In mouth, a crisp biscuit malt with grassy hops, light mineral notes, fruity notes, OK. On tap at Festibière de Gatineau été 2017.

On tap. Pours a clear pale yellow with a thin, short lived, white head that leaves spotty lacing. Skunky aroma of pale malt, grain and grass. Sweet flavour of grainy malt with bitter grass in the finish. Light body with a watery texture and average carbonation. One and done, disappointing.

(bottle, 33cl) Cloudy, orange-golden colour with a mid-sized off-white foamy head. Yeasty and phenolic spicy aroma with malty notes, backed by fruity and delicately resiny hops, including notes of citrus, grapefruit and apricot. Bitter and delicately sweet flavour, light bodied with a slightly crisp carbonation. Yeasty, mildly malty base with drying and bittering spicy hops and a mildly fruity touch; bitter hoppy and spicy finish with slightly fruity spots. Likeable.  22.XII.14

(bottle, 33cl) Clear, pale golden colour with a blonde and short foamy layer. Slightly skunky draffy pale malt-character with shades of burnt rubber, accompanied by doughy spots and slightly grassy, herbal hops. Moderately bitter and delicately sweet flavour, slim bodied with a tame carbonation. Slim malt-character with a tinge of butter and a rough grassy hoppy touch, which is getting slightly metallic towards the slim and slightly malty finish. Not good. 22.XII.14

(bottle, 33cl) Cloudy, yellow colour with a diminishing frothy white head. Yeasty, fruit-accented aroma with notes of apricot, banana and oranges, as delicately floral and resiny hops, backed by a moderate wheat character. Mildly sweet flavour, quite watery on the palate with an almost creamy carbonation. Dry-ish wheaty malty base with mildly fruity and slightly spicy notes; slim wheaty, mildly sweet and delicately hop bitter finish. Unfortunately a tad too slim, otherwise likeable. 22.XII.14

330ml bottle. Pours a clear copper with a small, short lived, off-white head that leaves spotty lacing. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, biscuit, tangerine, orange, melon, pineapple and mango. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, biscuit, toffee, mango, pineapple, melon, orange, grapefruit rind, tangerine and lemon with a dry, mildly bitter, hoppy finish. Light to medium body with an oily texture and average carbonation. Decent.

Friend A Collaborative Ale Banded Belgian Tripel from Village Brewery

Bouteille de 650ml du Canada Craft club. Un profil olfactif fruité au premier nez, avec du zeste d’orange et épicé, avec du poivre et de la cardamone. Les houblons développent des notes de mangue et de fruits tropicaux. Pain frais en sous-note. La couleur est dorée avec une mousse moyenne à la persistance assez longue. À l’entrée de bouche, un fruité de levure et de houblonnage accompagne une certaine chaleur d’alcool un peu trop prononcée à mon gout. Les notes de pain sont légèrement plus prononcés qu’en olfactif. Les notes de mangue et de fruits tropicaux sont trop en sourdine et enterrés par une finale d’alcool légèrement astringente. Légèrement déçu. L’olfactif était pourtant prometteur.

Bottle: Poured a clear golden color ale with a nice white foamy head with OK retention and some light lacing. Aroma of residual candi sugar with some Belgian style malt notes is OK. Taste is mostly dominated by residual sugar candi notes with some alcohol ester and light yeasty spicy notes. Body is about average with oily texture and good carbonation with some apparent alcohol. Lacking some attenuation and residual sugar is a bit more dominant then I would have liked.

I'm not a big ipa guy, but this is definitely a well rounded beer. The bitterness is good, not astringent, and the malt backs it up nicely. Worth recommending for sure. From sobeys.
