Kuhnhenn Brewing Company
Microbrewery

United States 🇺🇸
Associated with 2 Venues
Established in 2001
The brewery sits on the corner of Mound and Chicago Road in the old Lutz hardware store which is owned by the Kuhnhenn family. The brothers started homebrewing when Eric went to college and was introduced to it. He brought the hobby home and introduced it to his brother Bret. Bret started selling homebrewing supplies from the hardware store and soon it became more profitable than selling hardware. The hardware component of the establishment did not disappear from the brewery until mid-2006.
The brewery uses converted equipment, the lauter tun was a peanut butter hopper from Quaker Oats cereal, the mash/boil kettle was a yeast starter for a sour dough bread company, their pilot system’s kettle was a 100-gallon coffee maker. They have a six kettle brew on the premises that allows them to make experimental beers.
The beers include Raspberry Eisbock, Winter Wonder Lager, Fourth Dementia, DRIPA and Simcoe Silly. The brothers brew about 80 different beers; most of these beers are small batches made for annual events. Kuhnhenn’s is also known for brewing seasonal and experimental strong beers.
Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. won a gold medal at the a World a Beer Cup for DRIPA (Double Rice IPA).
A satellite brewery (larger than the original, and with increased bottling capacity) has opened at 36000 Groesbeck Highway Clinton Township, Michigan 48035.

Aromas are muted dark fruit, molasses, raisins and dates. Flavors are somewhat similar to nose, raisins and plums stand out with molasses receding a bit. No second fermentation. Not bad but nothing special.

Green foil capped 12oz bottle was a literal mess. Opening it there was no fluid motion and nothing came out. With time it glugged and sputtered and I was able to retrieve some liquid from it. It pours with a chocolate milkshake looking body with a milkshake head. The aroma offers up boozy chocolate leading to chocolate fudge. The taste comes across very much sludgy and chocolate milkshake like. It's like drinking a frothy boozy chocolate mousse. Very strange as it's literally thick milkshake consistency. More sips keep revealing the same flavours of chocolate, velvety fudge and a wide swath of booziness. Interesting sipper.

Bottle from Tavour. Pours dark brn/blk with a tan smear. Aroma of bourbon, toffee, perhaps coffee and chocolate. And more. Arguably full bodied. Flavor is bourbon, toffee, dark malt, dark fruit notes, definitely chocolate. Not dry, but not sticky. Some bitterness, possibly from heat and wood astringency. Rather exquisite.

12oz bottle pours with a nice deep dark mahogany to black colored body that supports really no head at all. The aroma offers up inviting clouds of molasses, brown sugar stewed plums and dates and then a hit of chocolate malts blended with caramel. Yes. The taste delivers smooth slick sweet supple molasses and faint caramel bleeding quickly into sweet dark fruity esters. I get molasses and brown sugar dusted plums and dates. To midway a pleasing caramel note surfaces just as the modest booziness sets in with hints of smokiness and lightly roasted maltiness lingering into the after taste. Geez. This is dead on albeit the body is a tad thin.

Capped 12 oz from Tavour. Pours very dark brown with virtually no head. Aroma of heat and arguably cinnamon. Full bodied. Flavor is heat, cinnamon, smooth darkish toffee. Not dry. Not exactly bitter, but heat and other things successfully oppose the malt. Quite a nice sipper.
