Description
Põhjala Brewery is the brainchild of three friends and beer aficionados who, like many a future craft brewer, got tired of the tasteless watery lagers that the faceless megacorporations have saturated the beer market with.

We brew small batches of hand crafted ales, using the best malts, loads of mostly New World hops and a relentless passion for good beer. When creating our beers, we are inspired by Nordic nature, Estonian new cuisine and the work of our fellow microbrewers in the U.S., UK and Scandinavia who, in our opinion, are leading the craft beer revolution.

In hops we trust!

From tap at Põrgu. Finished my last evening with this one and rating from memory. Anyway, it was memorable indeed. Aroma reminded me of Green Flash Triple IPA, very hoppy, herbal and piney. True hop bomb. Taste is froggy - just as the name suggests. It is quite rough actually, leaves a strong hop bitterness into your mouth and it doesn’t let you go. Somehow I really liked this one, double IPA that is truly tough. Very well done and really following the concept that is laid out by the name.

Batch 016, bottle, released 2014. (I think the hops were: columbus, chinook, centennial). (7:3:7:3:15=3.5, rated: 09.08.2014)Pours amber with off-white head, The head stays for some time. Aroma is citrus, berries, malt, grass. Flavor is sweet, malt, pine, grass, caramel, citrus. Finish is very long resin bitter. Alcohol is not very noticeable. Overall: nice hoppy brew. Batch 195 (with Mosaic, Nelson etc.), BB 08.2016, tap+bottle. (8:3:9:4:16=4, rated: ~03.2016). Looks the same. Aroma is sweeter, no grass, more tangeringes and sweet citric notes, maybe some passion fruit even, Mosaic is clearly there. Flavor is sweet and bitter, citrus, tangerines, passion fruit, grapefruit. Finish is dry-grapefruit bitter with touch of alcohol. Feels very mellow for the ABV. Overall: I love batch 195. Batch 278 (with Ella, El Dorado etc.), bottle, BB 27.01.17. (8:3:8:4:15=3.8+, rated: 03.08.2016). Looks about the same golden-amber with off-white head. Aroma is fruity, citrus, tangerines, mango, passion fruit, some biscuity notes, some alcohol. Flavor is sweet and bitter, fruity, citrus, grapefruit, mango, pine. Finish is sticky sweet and intense dry-grapefruit bitter with some alcohol burn. Drinkability is good. Overall: liked the batch with Mosaic more, but this is still bloody good. Batch 390 (Nugget, Eureka! and Enigma), BB 14.08.17. (8:4:8:3:15=3.8, rated 29.07.2017) Pours amber. Aroma is stanky, piney, fruity, caramel, bit oxidized, some sauerkraut. Flavor is sweet and bitter, caramel, fruits, malt, sugar. Alcohol is well covered. Finish is pine bitter. Body is even bit watery. Overall: very good, reminds me some of the american IPA-s that are a year old but are still very good and drinkable. Too bad I didn’t notice this batch when it was fresh...

Bottle from Koht, Tallinn. Poured slightly hazy light amber with a big frothy white head. The aroma is grassy hop, pine needle, citrus. The flavour is medium bitter with a big Citra grass nettle light pepper spice hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Truly superb. The best beer from Estonia that I’ve had and one of the best IPA’s ever.
