Description
Põhjala Brewery is the brainchild of three friends and beer aficionados who, like many a future craft brewer, got tired of the tasteless watery lagers that the faceless megacorporations have saturated the beer market with.
We brew small batches of hand crafted ales, using the best malts, loads of mostly New World hops and a relentless passion for good beer. When creating our beers, we are inspired by Nordic nature, Estonian new cuisine and the work of our fellow microbrewers in the U.S., UK and Scandinavia who, in our opinion, are leading the craft beer revolution.
In hops we trust!

Medium brown color. Fairly spicy nose with a bit of molasses. The mouth is a bit thin and not so balanced. A bit unpleasantly sour. Not very balanced. Not very good. Lingering spicy finish with sour and chocolate notes. Yuck.

Tap @ Drink Baar. Pours dark brown with off white brownish head. Aroma is very strong alcohol, cocoa, and chili. Taste: alcohol (the nasty kind), sweetness, caramel, little bit watery, and cocoa. Finish is alcohol and chili burn. Overall: my first thought was: did someone drop vodka in by beer?! The alcohol was so nasty. The beer seemed like a mess, distracting alcohol, not enough body, chili seemed like failed attempt to cover up the alcohol etc. I really struggled finishing the 0,33L glass. Not a good beer. (Rating: 5:4:4:2:9=2.4) 0,33L bottle, batch 14/2. Aroma and look is similar to tap. Taste is also rather similar; alcohol is still very noticeable, but without the bad vodka taste. Chili finish seemed more moderate and more fitting, but still weird; imho chili done right is for example Mikkeller’s Texas Ranger. Overall: well I still think it’s a mess, but a lot more drinkable mess.

330 ml bottle from Drink Shop, Tallinn. Pours pitch black, brownish head, rich and stays well. Aroma is sharp, bitter chocolate, raw cocoa, some booze. Of course an intense bite of chilli, maybe a bit of roast. Taste sensation is strong at first, not many nuances coming out. Chilli is overshadowing the taste. Aftertaste has some more chilli, a bit raw and grassy, making my mouth glow and warming me from inside. Interesting beer, actually with a quite balanced body - although chilli rules, it does not feel weak or watery. Overall interesting experience, maybe even too intense, so not sure if I want to repeat it :)

Draught @ Porgu
Aroma has citrus, some spices and sweet apricot. Flavour is spicy with coriander, citrus and . Foamy but somewhat creamy palate. Leathery palate with some orange peel. Slightly sticky and a bit too spicy but refreshing anyway.

330 ml bottle. Pours pale, almost white - as the name suggests. Strong citrus in the aroma, a bit of yeast, some sweet candy, ginger and anise also there. Taste has some lemon peels, quite strong ginger flavour. All in all, nice refreshing summer beer, pretty light - and would go well with a variety of different foods. Has some lemon peels in the aftertaste, would like to drink this somewhat unusual witbier in a hot summer day!

Bottled, thanks Tbone! Hazy amber, mid sized head. Aroma of smoke and rye bread. Sweet with medium body and rounded mouthfeel. Lots of smoke with light rubbery tones, plenty of dough, notes of grapefruit. Peppery mid bitter finish.

Batch 13/5. Pours hazy reddish dark brown with small light tan head. The head stays for a moment. Aroma: malt, pine, fruits, rye in the background. Taste: malty, citrus, some spices, rye again is just a hint. Finish is long and bitter grapefruit. Medium carbonation. Overall: nothing exciting or special, but not really bad. I had it once before (maybe batch 2?) and I remembered it being better. Edit: it’s confirmed by Põhjala that they made some changes for this batch. The changes include adding body and hops, and also switching to new hops. Edit 2: tried again a month or so ago from tap at Drink Baar, it was totally different beer. Clearly shared a lot of similarities with Esimene Sorts and Uus Pruut. Not a bad beer, but nothing special

Bottled 330ml PBFVIII
Dark brown color, small beige head. Toasted aroma with notes of cocoa. Medium to full bodied. Caramel, cocoa, toasted, alcohol. Quite sweet. Clean and drinkable a bit more simple than I thought.
