Description
Põhjala Brewery is the brainchild of three friends and beer aficionados who, like many a future craft brewer, got tired of the tasteless watery lagers that the faceless megacorporations have saturated the beer market with.
We brew small batches of hand crafted ales, using the best malts, loads of mostly New World hops and a relentless passion for good beer. When creating our beers, we are inspired by Nordic nature, Estonian new cuisine and the work of our fellow microbrewers in the U.S., UK and Scandinavia who, in our opinion, are leading the craft beer revolution.
In hops we trust!

30cl on tap at Pudel, Tallinn. Clear mahogany with a small off-white head. Roasty aroma with dark fruits, dark malt, chocolate, hints of licorice and spices. Medium sweet with decent bitterness. Flavourful and warming but easy to drink. Nice one!

33cl bottle as a gift in Tallinn. Pours hazy pale golden with a small, white head. Fairly mid aroma of ginger, wheat and fruits with hints of lemon peel. Medium sweet and a bit fruity with some citrusy notes and a mild gingery finish with some bitterness. Slightly soda-like, but nice and refreshing. Interesting and certainly drinkable, but I imagine it would be nicer on a nice summer day. (2013-11-10)

(Keg at Põrgu, 20131125) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and light brown. Aroma had burnt malts, vanilla, sweetness and chocolate. Palate was full bodied and creamy with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, ash, sweetness, vanilla, hops and bitterness. Aftertaste was burnt, ashy and bitter. A nice but too burnt beer.

bottle from Õllepood nr.1, batch 13/4. Pours a bit hazy copper, head reduces to some bubbles and some of it remains. Aroma sweet malts, banana and mango. Hop character is there as well, even though a bit hidden. Taste is bitter mixed with something dry. Could be more balanced but there is something very agreeable among all those rough edges that are left in the taste. Aftertaste is not very long, although some hop bitterness remains around for a bit longer. Good beer that apparently sells out within days after it’s shipped to retailers - and not because it’s cheap. I am sure I will keep ordering this beer whenever and wherever I see it!

Bottle. Pours orange with a white head. This beer is really schizo and may have been infected... notes of smoke, candy, citrus hops, chocolate and paper. The rye adds some smoothness.
