Draft sample @ Birra Expo’14 Piacenza. Orangée trouble, col fin crémeux blanc cassé. Arôme offre un bouquet agréable mettant bien en avant ce côté herbacé de sauge. Malt de type pils-pâle sur un rétro poussiéreux. Palais est axé sur le malté et grains, côté sauge donne un très beau caractère à la bière. Malt garde aussi une pointe biscuitée, carapils avec une bonne bouche herbacée qui est unique et permet à la bière de se différencier de la banalité de ses consœurs belges.

Bottle thanks to Matt. Pours a cloudy orange with small frothy white head. The aroma is strong peach and funk. Light fruit and peach with light dryness. Easy to drink, very good.

Draught @ Open Baladin, Rome. Pours golden with a white head. Aroma of malt, grain, hay, light citrus. Flavor of malt, grain, honey, littrle citrus. Medium body, average carbonation. 070414

Draft @ Fiera della birra di Forli ’14. Dorée-orangée trouble, col léger blanc-cassé. Arôme offre ce bouquet unique de grains fermentés ponctué de légers esters le tout sur de très belles effluves d’abbaye dans un style belge. Houblonné en rétro-nasal offrant une note de nobles et citronné. Pointe grillée, et sucré modéré. Palais offre un classique des triples belges avec cette touche italienne. Le tout est franchement bien brassé, retrouve ce côté fruité et légèrement épicé teinté d’une belle touche ester rappelant la banane. Houblonné procure une dose ferme et sèche de citronné avec une levure prenante sur la fin tout comme les 8.5% qui se font réchauffant en fin de bouche. Un style que Montegioco maîtrise et dont certains brasseurs belges pourraient prendre exemple.

Draft @ Fiera della birra di Forli ’14. Dorée-paille sur un léger trouble, col blanc. Arôme offre de suite le caractère ester allemand tirant sur la banane. Houblonné noble allemand arrive en rétro-nasal. Palais garde ici aussi tout le caractère allemand avec une levure intense dans les confins des esters. Malts de caractère surtout au niveau ’wheat malts’ malt de blé, léger côté Pilsner pour un fini légèrement ’bready’.

2007 bottle, original imported batch to the U.S., drunk 2010
Figured this was big enough that it may benefit from some age on it. The pour was quite a deep mahogany brown with auburn highlights. Clear, leaving the sediment behind and a large beige head recedes steadily to cover.
Honey, caramel, toffee, prunes and just a hint of roasty/ashy coffee. Traces of yellow fruits that must have been more dominant when young but have no faded in to the caramel and just add to the maltiness. High strength of aroma, with alcohol present but thankfully adding dryness and very easily balanced by the malt.
In the mouth, it’s sweet, chewy, rich and thick. Some light oxidation going on, adding dried raisins and lots of plummy flavors. Tons of creamy vanilla-like malt sweetness clear to the finish, with black pepper phenols and alcohol attempting to balance. For the most part it does, though the beer still leans heavily to the sweet side. Has all the dark fruits, rich malt, phenols and alcohol of a BSA, but nothing really sets it apart, otherwise, from the rest of the pack.

Aroma: Balanced fruity and sweet malty.
Palate: Medium + body. Slightly sweet and a mild bitterness. Average to soft carbonation.
Taste: Sweet malty, raisins and fruity. Very well hidden alcohol.
Overall impression: Tasty balanced nice evening sipper.
