0,33 l can from a Bazaar supermarket at Kos. Brewed for Bepoukas. Clear golden with an one finger white head. Thin grainy malty aroma, some citrus. Low grainy taste, hints of malt, increasing cardboard. Cheap stuff.

Another Greek pale lager for the tourists, rated from a bottle at the Old Town restaurant in Agia Galini. Thick and frothy, snow white, creamy head, clear pure golden robe with deeper 'old gold' glow and visible sparkling. Aroma of withering grass, corn water even though it contains no corn (the maltose I guess), wet cereals, light touch of iron, dried out white bread, straw. Sharply numbing carbon dioxide at first with strongly minerally effect - but refreshing on a hot Cretan night; otherwise quite neutral in its onset, evolving into sweetish cerealliness with the sweetness clearly coming from maltose. Light iron aspects here and there, with a grainy core (and not much else) continuing into a mild floral hop bitter note in the end - and though it passes by ever so quickly, a floral aroma does linger a bit retronasally. Sweet, thin, bland and 'empty' like most industrial standard pale lagers, clearly not deserving even of the 'Pilsener' moniker, but on a 'microscopic' level, perhaps just a little less dull than Candia or Fix.

American style amber ale (or red ale) by an industrial brewery in Atalanti on the Greek mainland; from tap at RedKokkino beerhouse in Agia Galini, Crete. Thick and frothy, cobweb-lacing, pale yellowish beige, large-bubbled, breaking head on a clear pure and deep orange-glowing reddish-amber beer. Aroma of biscuit, unsalted peanuts, dried apricot, dried thyme, hint of Betterfood, dried orange peel to even vague bergamot, old honey, some onsetting oxidation. Sweet (even slightly sugary) onset but clean and sleek, hints of dried peach, red apple and apricot perhaps but non-estery with minerally carbonation effect; smooth but rather thinnish biscuity and caramelly malt sweet middle with very mildly toasty-bitterish edge, paired with a late herbal hoppiness, providing some gentle bitterness – malt and residual sugars sweetness remains, however, dominant. A faint whiff of orange peel passes by too. Very clean, slick red ‘ale’ – in fact I am wondering if this is really an ale, it felt rather lager-like, in which case this beer is to be reclassified as a Wiener, I guess… Anyway: in a village in the south of Crete this was the only beer ‘other’ than bland industrial lager so a welcoming distraction – in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king, as they say.

Can. Pours clear light golden with airy but stable white head. Weak aroma of yeast and malt, with hoppy hints. Bitter, hoppy flavour with sweetish notes of malt and yeast. Estery and malty aftertaste with hoppy touches. Another pale lager, but not bad for the style.
