Schooner on tap at The Gunners Arms, Launceston. Pale yellow beer with thin white head. A few bubbles ascend. Aroma is light and fruity. Flat mouthfeel, earthy hops prominent. Finish is sharp, herbal and earthy with a bitter kick. Late sweetness too. Nice, solid APA.

Tap at the Catfish, Melbourne. Poured a slightly hazy light amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is malt, light citrus hop, some alcohol notes. The flavour is moderate to strong bitter with a crisp, smooth fruity, nettle, woody, light resin hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish: medium bodied with average carbonation. A real bitter hop fest.

Tap at Slow Beer, Fitzroy, Melbourne. 2015 vintage @ 10.5%. Poured almost black with a broken light tan head. The aroma is roasted malt, liqourice, chocolate, molasses and alcohol. The flavour is moderate sweet, liqourice bitter with a smooth rich oily, bourbon palate and some slight alcohol burn. Medium bodied with flat carbonation.

(Bottle) Pours hazy golden yellow with small white head. Nice aroma - tart vinous vinegary notes, with funk and peppery spice. Good palate - light body with plentiful fine carbonation. The taste is nicely sour all the way - gentle wine vinegar at the start and more citrus towards the finish citrus. There’s subtle orange notes and some peppery spice. Nice sour beer.

[ As Boatrocker Alpha Queen ].Clear medium yellow colour with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, white to off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, pale malt, vegetables - floral, moderate hoppy, wet hops, minerals. Flavor is moderate sweet with a average duration, wet hops, minerals, pale malt, sweet malt, vegetables - floral. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft. [20160922] 5-3-6-3-11

Tap. Gold, white head that fades after a time. Aroma of grapes, damp laundry, light citrus, some nectarine - smells like their Mitte mixed with a cheapish sparkler. And the taste is along the same lines - the sourness, though, is somehow modest but deep. And that depth of flavour makes the whole thing refreshing but not frivolous. Pretty good.

Bottle. Clear pale copper with a loose white head that fades fast. Aroma of tropical fruit, mild fruity funk, some herbal notes, a little caramel. Light bodied verging on thin, lowish carbonation. Tropical fruit and funk with a little sweetness but no great malt presence. A little sourness is more twang than acidic presence. No particular finish. IPA is a broad church but I’m sure how this fits. A few things going on but it’s shapeless.

Aniseed is the dominant flavour in this dark, slightly too sweet beer. It has elements of saison, but the liquorice is something I’m not so familiar with in this genre. There are also aromas of coffee, milk and burnt toasts and some happiness in the aftertaste to offset the sweetness and it has a good body. A really interesting beer but probably not my favourite.

Bottle. Deep reddish brown with no head. Aroma of cherries, balsamic glaze, strong bread, oak. Moderately slippery texture, carbonation is very low (but it’s not flat, though supposedly supposed to be). Not all that acidic or sour but both are there with cherries, bread and oak that’s edging up on intrusive. Autumnal and easygoing with a brooding lurking funk behind. Very good.

On tap at Bitter Phew. Pours pale with a big fluffy head. Belgian candy, pear, black pepper, ginger, lemon, little brioche. Very sweet, but with enough spice and fruit to stop it being too much. Nice.
