Description
Four lifelong Oregonians got together on February 13, 2009 and decided that their knowledge of locale and understanding of craft beer could be an excellent starting point for a business. Later that year Hop Valley Brewing had its debut in Springfield, Oregon, but grew too large for its 15-barrel capacity and opened a new 60-barrel brewhouse and taproom in Eugene in 2013. In July 2016 MillerCoors acquired a majority stake of Hop Valley through its Tenth and Blake craft beer and import division. Hop Valley Brewing Company will operate as a separate business unit of Tenth and Blake.

Hazy gold beer, tidy pale cream colour head. Palate is smooth and airy, fine carbonation. The malt is clean, as promised on the label, and is slightly sweet with a touch of cream. Hops are spicy pine. Some drying alcohol aniseed, but no real heat. Touch of citrus before a semi dry finish. Decent and drinkable.

Slight haze, light amber, chewy character, crystal malt, light hops are vague but chewy. I guess a little basic

355ml bottle. Minimally cloudy, orangey golden colour with small to average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Citrusy hoppy aroma with hints of grapefruit, biscuity malt basis, hints of almond, sugar powder, marzipan, also a touch of ’Sauerkraut’. Taste is initially simply bitter hoppy, later citrusy with lemon notes, minimally sweet biscuity malt basis, hints of lemon biscuit; bitter finish with almond touch. Second class IPA.

Bottle from De Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Deep amber, hazy body, with a big, creamy, white head. Fresh aroma of grapefruit, pine, passion fruit, peach, caramel. Taste with about the same aromas, but with a pretty dominant grapefruit and dryness. Mouthfeel is medium to light, slick, with a moderate carbonation and it finishes bitter, dry, piney and citric. Very good. The nose is really delicious and fresh, but the taste is a bit too much dominated by the grapefruit for my liking and pretty strong, close to a Double IPA. Still a tasty and refreshing IPA, that also has distinct pine and tropical fruit notes and the right amount of caramelic malts.

22oz bottle pours a clear bright orange with some cloudy, lacing white head. Nose has vinous notes, white grape, pine, orange, grapefruit, mild soap. Flavor is crisp, mostly orange and mild tangerine, grapefruit, mild pine, little bits of mango. Crisp finish. Solid.

Bottled @ de Molen tasting, small sample. Dark brown color, short off-white head. Aroma of roasted malts, slight chocolate and mocha, slight hint of vanilla. Medium sweet in taste, with more vanilla present. Slight dry and bitter as well. I was expecting much more vanilla, but its almost non-present in aroma and more present in flavor, but all quite subtle. Felt more like a dry stout than a porter, with some vanilla added. Not bad, a bit weak perhaps.

I was expecting more of a Citra presence, but this came off as more of a pale ale. Light citrusy aroma and taste, but not enough bitterness to be in IPA territory. A good beer, but not a great IPA.

Bottle at the De Molen second Tuesday tasting August 2014. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy light tan head. The aroma is roasted malt, creamy caramel. The flavour is medium bitter, light sweet with a light watery malt liqourice bitter, vanilla, light hop spice palate. Medium to light bodied with average carbonation.

On IPA day. 12 oz bottle from De Bierkoning @ home. Golden color, slightly hazy. White head, not too long retention. Aroma’s: citrus (notably grapefruit), fruit, light earth. Retronasal there’s citrus, light malt sweetness. Flavor is rather bitter, with a light sweet backbone. Medium bodied. Normal carbo. Finish is bitter, somewhat dry. I’m starting to really like this Hop Valley Brewing.

Very bitter beer, with a crispy taste of floral, grassy hops. Body is just good, lets the hops stand out. Good beer.
