Description
Four lifelong Oregonians got together on February 13, 2009 and decided that their knowledge of locale and understanding of craft beer could be an excellent starting point for a business. Later that year Hop Valley Brewing had its debut in Springfield, Oregon, but grew too large for its 15-barrel capacity and opened a new 60-barrel brewhouse and taproom in Eugene in 2013. In July 2016 MillerCoors acquired a majority stake of Hop Valley through its Tenth and Blake craft beer and import division. Hop Valley Brewing Company will operate as a separate business unit of Tenth and Blake.

Rich deep brown coloured body with a nice thick three centimetre tall tan head and a nice violet coloured glow. Aroma of light malt, nuts, earth and perhaps the slightest bit of vanilla - relatively mild nose, not much going on. Medium-bodied; Strong malt flavour up front with a little brown sugar and pit fruits and a solid vanilla and sweet finish with not much malt at all. Aftertaste is very weak and watery with a touch of malt, some light nuts and a hint of the vanilla and sugars - but not much at all. Overall, not a great offering and even though I wasn’t expecting much, after seeing some of these scores, I thought i’d get a good beer - but it wasn’t to be. Too thin with a mild flavour makes for a decent beer, but not to the ratings that are here. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Made in Oregon in Portland (PDX Airport - Terminal D), Oregon on 08-December-2013 for US$4.95 sampled at home in New Paltz, New York on 18-January-2014.

Deep amber coloured body with hints of light brown and a thin, fast-dying tan head. Aroma of bitter malt, nuts, earth, toffee and the slightest hint of spices. Medium-bodied; Assertive malts throughout with some cereal and earth noticeable, a bit of caramelised sugars and again, a tiny bit of spice noticeable showing some cinnamon and nutmeg. Aftertaste shows more of the malt and nuts than anything else - some light sweetness and that’s about it. Overall, a pretty standard offering with the maltiness and toffee coming through the most, but the earth and bitterness showing the harshest flavours. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Belmont Station in Portland, Oregon on 11-November-2013 for US$3.49, sampled at home in Washington on 23-December-2013.

On tap at Belmont Station. Pours a clear golden hue with a large white head. A huge tropical fruit nose, lemons especially. The flavor showcases fruity hops, low bitterness, caramel, orange peel, a bit of melon in this, maybe papaya, very sweet and drinkable. Quite nice. Re-rate: had as Mouth Raper as well. Same score. On tap at Beermongers. Pours a clear yellow/copper color with a medium white head. A nice fruity nose, some citrus and orange peel. The flavor has hop resin, oranges, some zesty lemons and grapefruit, pretty balanced overall though. Drinks like a Pale Ale.

Bomber from Made in Oregon. Pours translucent gold with a slight white head. Light fruit aroma - very light. Med body. Flavor is a little acidic, perhaps citrus, with a wheat note. Clean, but not very interesting. Finishes fairly bitter.

On tap at Orenco Taphouse. Pours a clear copper (brownish) color with a medium white nitro head. A light nutty aroma, some toasted malts and caramel. The flavor is more nutty, some toasted fruity malts, yeast, some sweetness. On nitro so that subdues some flavor. Decent.
