Bottle at Taps Beer Bar, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a dark mahogany colour with a thin broken tan head and a little broken lace. The aroma is very clearly of sweet fruit and chocolate and this also dominates the flavour too. There is also some late developing bitterness on the palate and in the aftertaste. It’s a great Chocolate Porter, but its one of those Chocolate beers that might become a little sickly after a while.

Dark brown opaque beer. Tidy cream - tan colour head. Light semi dry palate. A little papery dark malt, mild and slightly aged tasting. Mild orange hop underneath. Mild dark chocolate powder. Dry finish. Okay if a bit clunky.

My first whiff of this had me ready to pour it down the sink but it came good as I sniffed on through the pain, with banana, tang, coriander and white pepper coming through. The palate is alarmingly soapy and a little thin, but the flavour is good, with lemon, orange and coriander.

From a 500ml bottle on 2/2/2012. Pours a clear bright golden with a small head which dissipates quite quickly. Has a very pleasant floral, fruity hop aroma, with a touch of caramel malt. Flavour wise, there is some muted caramel sweetness up front, along with some orange, mango and a bit of pineapple. The bitterness is reasonably assertive, with grapefruit and pine prevalent in quite a dry finish. Perhaps just a little muted on the malt side, this is otherwise an impressive US style IPA from Holgate.

From a 500ml bottle on 27/11/2012. Pours the darkest of amber with a big fine head. Has a strong aroma of chocolate, coffee, cocoa, vanilla, spices and a touch of soy sauce. The flavour is powerful with dark chocolate, strong dark roast coffee, some caramel, licorice and vanilla. Finishes with a very intense, slightly salty hop bitterness. The palate is creamy and carbonation average. This is possibly the biggest, most intense Aussie beer I’ve tried to date, and it’s a cracker - very complex, unusual and well balanced. Definitely a sipper. If this was produced by some US brewery with a big rep, I think the ratings for it would go through the roof. All up, an exceptional brew.

Pours dark brown with a small head.Banana and doughy wheat are prominent in the aroma along with some caramel and brown sugar. Textbook dunkelweizen aroma really.Flavours instead focus on nutty malt with some banana showing later, along with some wheat.Carbonation is a little too high.

Pours dark brown with a small head.Nose shows soft roasted malt, coffee and faint chocolate.Hefty flavours, more roasted malt and some bitter-sweet earthy coffee too. Some hot alcohol shows.Too much carbonation.Needs a bit of time to settle down.

It’s all sweetness and malt on the nose. I’m not very experienced with the bitters, but it wasn’t want I was expecting. The maltiness also comes through strongly on drinking but it’s more palatable without quite as much sugar. There’s some nice, modest hoppiness at the end. Overall, it’s a nice taste but probably a little bit simple. Malt, then hop. The end.
