Description
When Phil Bennett began planning for the Beowulf Brewing Company in 1996 there was no brewing going on in Birmingham. The original site of the brewery was in Yardley, where independent beer production started in the city in 1997. Beowulf began in a disused ex Co-op shop. Our original “signature” beer, Heroes Bitter, is still popular and sits at the head of an capacious list of regular and occasional beers. Now on the shore of Chasewater near Brownhills, Staffordshire the brewery is awash with Regional and National awards. Beowulf’s dark beers attract particular praise, devotion and accolades. The brewery celebrated its first twenty years last year and in 2018 we will finally get it together to have a beautiful website… turns out the internet is not a flash in the pan! Please come back and see it. All our cask and bottled beers will be listed along with some other interesting stuff.

Cask at the Wellington Hotel, Birmingham on 28th December 2013. Hazy copper with thin cream-coloured film and plenty of lacing. Yeasty and malty aromas. Touch of soapiness. Leafy hops, notes of sage and lemon in-mouth. Citric finish, slightly musty in an interesting rather than unpleasant sense. Generally tangy. Light in body and mouthfeel.

Two hand-pulled pints in The Cock Hotel, Wellington on 29th Dec 13. Clear golden body with a good white crown. The nose was a sweet, fruity, floral affair with an apple blossom sort of aroma at it’s heart. The taste was not so sweet as the smell had suggested, this is semi-bitter with a dry finish. Well balanced though, there is an underbelly of malts trying to get out: they fail but you know they are there. Medium bodied and light on the palate: easy drinking brew, worth finding.

Hand-pulled half-pint in The Crown Inn, Oakengates on 6th Dec 13. Golden bodied brew with a white head of thin foam. Caramel biscuit aroma with a mild hop undertone of citrus fruits. The taste was also semi-sweet maltiness and again with a lesser feel of hop citrus ness and bitterness. OK more than great, pleasant enough without setting anything on fire. Medium bodied and the alcohol was well hidden by the blend of flavours.

Cask at The Barton Arms; clear amber pour with minimal white head, feint citrus aroma, citrus comes through slightly in the taste, backed up with sweet malts, not enough carbonation.

Hazy amber beer, tidy pale cream coloured head. Palate is softish with fine carbonation providing a nibble. A little malt cream. Resinous and bitterish marmalade hops. Trace of lemon and pine. Finishes semi dry, mildly bitter aftertaste. Decent.
