Un très grand merci à Graham, qui a spécialement sélectionné pour moi ce Barley Wine vieilli en fût de Speyside très appréciable. La Base du Barley Wine est en premier lieu bien réussi, sur une texture sirupeuse, des arômes simples mais efficaces de Caramel, candy, zest d'orange fruits confits, et un bon équilibre entre douceur et alcool. Ce dernier, à 10% soutient d'ailleurs très bien la structure. Le vieillissement en fut de Speyside et de plus plutôt bien réussi. Ce lui se marie très bien à la base et donne une tonicité supplémentaire à l'ensemble. La robe ambrée quasi limpide est de surcroit jolie. 2 petits bémols viennent toutefois ombrager le tableau. En premier, si les arômes fonctionnent bien, ils manquent de complexité et de profondeur. Le deuxième bémol est plus personnel avec un Speyside que j'aurais apprécié légèrement en retrait pour mieux mettre en avant la base du Barley Wine. Sympathique.

375ml bottle. Hazy brown, small off-white head. Aroma of rum, booze, raisin, dried fruits. Taste is sweet, raisin, dried fruits, toffee/caramel, light vanilla/tonka, subtle chocolate, rum BA coming through nicely, very warming boozy finish with a slightly odd aftertaste that I can't place. Medium bodied, smooth. Decent but the adjuncts are lacking, possibly a good thing? Not sure.

375ml bottle. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of raspberry jam, chocolate, subtle JD. Taste is very jammy, so much raspberry - no ingredients listed though (flavourings?), base is sweet and chocolatey, mild tonka, there's no peanut at all. Body felt somewhat thin - medium-ish, but it's very smooth and the JD comes through nicely at the end. Tasty but doesn’t fully deliver.

Bottle from Hoptimism and day 24 of my advent. Hazy amber colour with a white head. Taste toffee, chocolate and vanilla. Sweet to bittersweet. Boozy.

Bottle from Boutilliers. Appearance - murky amber to brown with a thin but attractive white head. Nose - light Islay smoke, rich toffee, hazelnuts, praline and general booze. Taste - smoke, toffee, orange in syrup and praline. Palate - medium to full bodied, sweet middle, smoky finish. Overall - using an Islay barrel with a beer is a huge risk and so this beer would be better in another barrel.

Bottle thanks to Ashton McCobb. Pours hazy golden with a thin white head. Aromas of tcp, Islay whisky, wood smoke. Taste is caramel, vanilla, whisky. Boozy finish.

Bottle from Boutilliers Online Shop. Appearance - hazy amber to brown. Slightly off-white head. Nose - sweet malty bread, sweet spice and white chocolate. Taste - white chocolate, sweet spice and milky coffee. Palate - medium bodied, rich and sweet with light spice. Overall - lovely stuff.
