Bottle thanks to Aaron. Pours a very hazy pale yellow a fluffy white head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a nice funky nose with light fruits, flora and a hint of light grains. Flavor begins with a good amount of Brett with some earthy sweet grains and a hint of flora.

Bottle @ home. This year’s version was made with lemon peel instead of grapefruit peel and had a bigger abv (6.8% abv per the bottle compared to 6.0% last year). Somewhat spicy, fairly lemon citrusy forward, sweet, a touch peppery aroma. Nice, sweet malty flavor with a lemon citrusy and peppery notes. It has a nice flavor with a more citrus forward element that I remember last year’s version having. Unfortunately, the beauty of a witbier is being thirst quenching and easy to drink during the hot weather. This is a little more intense due to the abv and not nearly as easy to drink as I think it should be for its style. A bit of a shame that they increased the abv, but it’s tasty to drink nonetheless.

Tap @ Funkwerks. Reddish orange appearance with a white head. Quite spicy, peppery, caramel malty, light citrusy aroma. Fairly toasty malty, caramel/bready, black peppery, light citrusy flavor. Not all that interesting.

Tap @ Funkwerks. Fairly flourescent, reddish orange appearance with a small off-white head. A bit citrusy, fairly spicy/peppery aroma. Notes of lemon and other citrus fruits, as well as a light malty toastiness, and a fairly amount of spice in the flavor. I didn’t really get kiwi at all, but there was a slight added citrusy note. Pretty boring firkin release.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Funkwerks. JetsonFest II. Fairly clear, dark brown appearance with a light brown head. Candy sugar, dark fruity (plum, fig), molasses, caramel aroma. Thick candy sugar, dark caramel, molasses flavor with amount of fruity esters (plum, citrus, etc).

Rated at the 2012 RB Pgh May tasting. Big thanks to Horny Devil. Nice big foamy head. A slightly fruity aroma with a farmy background. Lots of co2 on the palate but its a gentle non-sizzling kind of co2; nice. Burns a little going down the hatch. Fading lacing. Volatile on the olfactory after a while. Fairly alky forward. Finish is warming.

Tap @ Funkwerks. Colorful, somewhat hazy orange appearance with a nice white head. Light herbal element in the nose but it’s mostly dominated by the black pepper and spicy yeast. The spiciness in the flavor really dominates with a double punch of peppercorns and peppery yeast, but it does dissipate a bit towards the finish allowing some of the fruit and green tea notes. I’m not a fan of the peppercorn addition, as it really just makes the saison overly spicy rather than complementing the original recipe.

Tap at Rackhouse - black pour - a lot of sediment in the bottle of the glass - much more hefty than I was expecting - with a fair amount of bittersweet chocolate a first, followed by drier notes of roast and smoke - Belgian yeast adds a touch of phenolic character, mild esters - a moderate tartness compliments a light woodiness in the finish - I enjoyed this.

It was decent, but kind of a let down for my first Funkwerks beer.
