As the “Köstritzer Erbschenke” the Köstritzer black beer brewery is first mentioned in 1543, making it one of the oldest breweries in Germany. In 1948, the brewery became a "Volkseigener Betrieb" after the state of Thuringia had expropriated it. In 1991 the Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei became part of the Bitburger Group and within a few years it has grown into one of the most modern and largest breweries in Thuringia.

0.33 l bottle from local 'trinkgut', best before January 2019. Black with a thin, frothy, stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty aroma of caramel, some nuts and a touch of chocolate. Slightly sweet, malty, a bit roasty taste of caramel, toasted nuts, some chocolate and hints of wort, followed by a short, moderately bitter, slightly roasty and a bit metallic finish. Thin to medium body, gently effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Not really a good Schwarzbier, almost tastes a bit unfinished. Disappointing!

Sampled from 0.5 l bottle from 'EDEKA Preller' (Breckerfeld), best before March 2019. Clear, golden with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, white head. Slightly sweet, moderately bitter, a bit grassy-spicy taste of grains and some straw, followed by a short, moderately bitter, slightly metallic and a bit grassy-spicy finish. Thin to medium body, slightly effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Pretty bad, fairly unpleasant.

Pours clear golden colour, topped with a smaller and nonlasting white head. Bready nose with some corn, no real fruitiness to be picked up. Mildly sweet, hints of citruses. Sugary feeling takes over. Ok drinkable radler.
