Description
As the “Köstritzer Erbschenke” the Köstritzer black beer brewery is first mentioned in 1543, making it one of the oldest breweries in Germany. In 1948, the brewery became a "Volkseigener Betrieb" after the state of Thuringia had expropriated it. In 1991 the Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei became part of the Bitburger Group and within a few years it has grown into one of the most modern and largest breweries in Thuringia.

Bottle 50 cl. Pours a hazy amber with a white head. VERY subtle citrusy hops, very, very. Solid malty body, caramellish with a solid bitterness. Again, just tuning up the hops does not an IPA make - at least not a very good one. And how the f... it has managed to reach this score is beyond me. 040417

On tap @ Verklicker, Langeoog. Golden orange with a beautiful head. Aroma of malts. Taste is sweet, grainy, malty, fruity and only slightly hoppy. A hint of yeast. Nice mouthfeel. Medium carbonation. Easily sessionable but why drink a Kellerbier that’s not from Franconia?

From 33cl bottle at Metropolis HBF, Mannheim, Germany. Pours Coca Cola black, with limited whitish foam. Aroma is toasted cereal, not really roasted. Body is light, kind of watery, with medium-high carbonation. Taste is moderately sweet, with a focal hint of bitterness, probably from the toasted malts. Finish is short, though.

Pours fairly clear amber color, topped with a decently sized and very cream, lasting off-white head. Biscuity malty back with some sweet fruity notes upfront. Moderately bitter with quite herbal presence in the finish. Slight malty sweetness upfront. Quite lasting and extra strong herbal/medicinal aftertaste. Not too bad, but the finish ruins it quite a bit.
