Description
As the “Köstritzer Erbschenke” the Köstritzer black beer brewery is first mentioned in 1543, making it one of the oldest breweries in Germany. In 1948, the brewery became a "Volkseigener Betrieb" after the state of Thuringia had expropriated it. In 1991 the Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei became part of the Bitburger Group and within a few years it has grown into one of the most modern and largest breweries in Thuringia.

12 ounce bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark chocolate brown color with a large head and moderate head retention and lacing. Aroma is somewhat faint, with notes of roasted malts and stone fruits. Taste is roasted malts, coffee, dark fruits and a sweet cotton candy/bubblegum thing going on in the background. Medium bodied.

(Bottle 50 cl) Courtesy of Hildigöltur. Clear orangey brown with a frothy, off-white head. Aroma mainly of pineapple. Light body, sweet pineapple notes and nothing much else really. The flavourings overpower the base beer. No bitterness. 100908

Bottle, poured into a pint glass. Looks dark as night with a thin tan head that leaves quickly. Smells nutty, and of roasted malts. Flavor is wonderfull, dark malt, creamy, slightly bitter with a clean finish. I love how the malt profile is the promenant flavor it makes for a nice rich beer.

Bottle, 2.4%. Citric pineapple aroma. Dark brown colour. The flavour starts off with sweet pineapple, then turns more rough and dark malty, seems to have some aspartam.
