Description
As the “Köstritzer Erbschenke” the Köstritzer black beer brewery is first mentioned in 1543, making it one of the oldest breweries in Germany. In 1948, the brewery became a "Volkseigener Betrieb" after the state of Thuringia had expropriated it. In 1991 the Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei became part of the Bitburger Group and within a few years it has grown into one of the most modern and largest breweries in Thuringia.

50cl bottle. Blackish with beige head. Aroma of light roasted caramel. Taste roasted malts and caramel. Lightly hoppy. Found the beer to be too poor in taste with too much of a metallic taste.

Bottle, Carringtons, Chorlton. Poured a dark chocolate brown with a thick biege head. Looked the bizniz. Aroma was dark malt, chocolate, raisin and some hop. Flavour was similar.Surprised to find that the flavour was rather subdued and lacking any real punch. Maybe that’s indicative of this style ? which is new to me at this stage. Smooth and clean but a bit thin, and I was starting to get bored with this halfway through the glass.. .

(Re-rate, draught at Black Door, 20120804) The beer poured almost black and clear. Its head was medium sized and almost white. Aroma had roasted malts, burnt malts and metallicness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, metallicness, burnt malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was roasty and bitter. A very good combination of very burnt flavour and German hops.
(Draught at Sophien 11, Berlin, on 2008-02-06) Almost black in colour. Good lastin head. Some roasted malts in taste. Hints of sweetness. Later some bitterness begins to taste. Not in my liking, still. Old rating: 4-4-4-3-10=2.4
