Description
As the “Köstritzer Erbschenke” the Köstritzer black beer brewery is first mentioned in 1543, making it one of the oldest breweries in Germany. In 1948, the brewery became a "Volkseigener Betrieb" after the state of Thuringia had expropriated it. In 1991 the Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei became part of the Bitburger Group and within a few years it has grown into one of the most modern and largest breweries in Thuringia.

Bottle. Creamy lightbrown good mostly lasting head. Dark redamber colour. Ugly cola aroma and flavor. Almost no beer in this. Watery palate. Really bad "beer".

Bottle. Pour is a dark brown and just as the dense head (about one finger high) finishes forming I’m hit with a roasted malt aroma that has a touch of a chocolate feel to it. A couple of seconds later the aroma seems lighter, maybe a caramel air with a touch of a sour promise in the background... possibly a touch of peat or smoke, too. Flavor picks up on these peat/smoke notes nicely and they mingle nicely in the background while a slighly toasted malt takes the main stage. It isn’t a burnt flavor to the malt, but it is dark and toasty. Anyhow, there is nothing earthshattering about this beer, but I would definitely have a second. It is really well balanced.

(Bottle 50 cl) Clear, pale, pilsener golden with a small, white head. malty, slightly bready aroma. Medium-bodied dominated by a fairly dry hopping. Certainly a decent effort for a Diät. 071106

An orange beer with a fluffy fast disappearing white head. The aroma is sweet malthy combined with a strawy hoppy note. The flavor is sweet with a quite light malty note (no wonder), but also a dry hoppy metallic end. A boring hop sort must have been used.

Slight, interesting, methane/sulfur aroma, but definitely not offensive, if that is possible. Very dark dark dark brown but not quite opague in my steelers mug. Dude on the front, wearing an azure hat, is catching a schwarzbuz. Initial burnt surprize without too much of a hard hitting bitter finish. A little unrefined.

Bottle. No head - bubbles only - just like a soda. Aroma is citrus. Taste is awful with a weird sweetness and acidity. Bad combo here.

Very dark brown. Fairly light. Some aroma of roasted malt, and flavor that is a little bitter with more light malt. Thin.

Bottle. Golden colour, semi-stable, frothy white head. OK bitterness with a creamy hint. Better than expected for a Diät-pils.
