Description
As the “Köstritzer Erbschenke” the Köstritzer black beer brewery is first mentioned in 1543, making it one of the oldest breweries in Germany. In 1948, the brewery became a "Volkseigener Betrieb" after the state of Thuringia had expropriated it. In 1991 the Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei became part of the Bitburger Group and within a few years it has grown into one of the most modern and largest breweries in Thuringia.

Bottled. Dark brown beer with a medium-sized tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, with some caramel and hops. Flavor is mostly roasted malt, but there’s some hops lurking in the background. Medium to thin mouthfeel, and a dry, roasted finish. (060201)

Bottled. Almost black, with a dark brown/reddish tinge. Rather light body, with a nice roasted taste of dark bread and chocolate. A dash of bitterness at the end. Nice taste, but a bit short and light bodied. 5/3/4/3/13=2.8 (Rerate: draught at Man in the Moon, Stockholm) Dark brown colour with ruby hints. Frothy, pale brown head. Malty, slightly roasted nose with dark bread and raisins. Malty, roasted taste with notes of dark rye bread, raisins, chocolate and a dry, roasted finish with a moderate, spicy bitterness. Medium body, mainly dry. Nice and tasty beer.

(bottle) Very dark almost black colour with a big but diminishing foamy brown head. Faint malty nose with a touch of toffee. Medium bitter flavour, medium to light bodied, medium carbonation. Slightly roasty malty taste, hints of dark chocolate, dry and moderate bitter finish. I think it´s not that spectacular, but okay though. All in all an average but still very drinkable Schwarzbier.

This brewer has failed to impress me. This was the only time I have had this particular offering. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a medium golden color with a large yellow-white head. The aroma is sour vegetal malts. The flavor is macro tang with a hint of nutmeg and some other vague tasting spices. The mouthfeel is fairly thin and watery. Completely unimpressive.

Bottle Murky, deep brown body. Brown, lightly frothy head. It has a nose of sweet malts with liquor. Lightly bitter, lightly sweet flavour. Long finish. Nice, but neither tempting neither extra-ordinary.
