Amber ale from a new ’beer company’ brewing at Millevertus, apparently. Bottle from Willems. Opening it over the sink proved to be the right decision: heavy gusher, beer streamed out of the bottle upon opening. What I am left with, is a coppery amber coloured beer with a thick fog of yeast bits clouding the entire robe; head is pale yellowish white, lacing, with a dense, creamy texture. Aroma strongly dominated by damp forest floor, otherwise hints of dry hay, hazelnut, soggy bread, earthy turnips, old dried thyme, tea leaves, peanuts, jute, dried orange peel, some faint ’old painted furniture’-like phenols and vague H2S (rotting egg) - clearly (re)fermentation went wrong here. Taste kicks off with dried banana, some redcurrant, red apple peel, medium strong carbo, deep sourish hint even to the point where I am beginning to suspect light bacterial infection, further strengthened by a vague lactic acidity further onwards in the palate. Underneath lies a deeply toasted and nutty, bittersweet malt character. Finishes in lingering malts and heavy ’dirty’ baker’s yeast along with the - subtle but omnipresent - deep sourishness, remaining esters and earthy, leafy, ’dull’ hop bitterness enhancing the toasted character of the malts; a very (overly) bready yeastiness remains. The overall impression is clearly, and I hate to use this word, ’dirty’: this is a mediocre idea badly executed. Sorry, but I do not see the point in this beer at all. I have had worse Wallonian ’ambrées’ than this, in the sense of being even more badly infected, but this is far from enjoyable in this form, I’m afraid.

Bottle 330ml (from oh6gdx). Dark amber brown color, medium-sized off-white head. Aroma is odd, toffeish and cellary. Light-bodied to medium-bodied. Malty, a bit cellary, grassy, oxizided. Messy. Duh.

More a Belgian-style barley wine, if such a thing exists, than a tripel. Warm, deep orange amber colour, hazy; rich aroma of peach, blood orange, white wine, Grand Marnier, lemon zest, brandy, rose petals, caramel. Very fruity sweet taste, peach with vanilla, caramel malts, smooth, spicy, citrussy, floral hops in the finish, more aromatic than bitter, agreeable warming alcohol. If you don’t look at this as a tripel, it is quite an enjoyable and warming brew.
