12 oz. loose bottle, $1.59 at Binny’s. Thick grainy and peaty smell out of the bottle. Poured in a shaker glass, there’s a deep brown body with few highlights. A tan, foamy head. Smell in glass is slightly grainy, not much sweetness, and a bit of spice from that heather thingie. Again, not much sweetness to taste, just some solid barley which can’t help but be a little grainy, plus somewhat earthy. I’ve had too few heather beers to be able to describe the taste, just a bit of leafy herb, I guess. I also find most Scotch ales hide their alcohol well, and this one is no exception. May 2: Just found out this is my 1,500th American beer rating! And while crappy foreign-owned macrobrews may dominate the US market, they are as nothing compared to the thousands of great local brews being made upon this shore. To my brothers overseas I say, the world may be focused upon the Cup in South Africa this summer, but when that’s done (and the US team has made its usual "good sport" showing), I hope you’ll all come visit us for the incredible variety of good beers from thousands of small American brewers. Yet, I hope to visit as many overseas small brewers as I can, if ever given the chance!

Pours golden orange color with off white head. Citrus and pine hop aromas. Moderately bitter flavor with pine hops and some caramel malts. Medium body with average carbonation.

Pour is a brown with a small tan head. Aroma is nice with a nice spicy rye with a equally nice citrus pine hop. Flavor is big earthy malts wih again a huge helping of the rye. The hops do not make that much of an appearance but only b/c the rye is so up front. This was a nice find.

Bottled at Monk’s Café Walingatan, Stockholm. Hazy deep golden, minimal head. Aroma of ripe banana. Mid sweet with clean, rounded mouthfeel and medium body. Lightly spicy with notes of toffee. Low bitterness. Quite refreshing. A correct weizen, but nothing great.

12oz bottle. Deep burgundy- toffee color. Thick, steady beige head. Rye and a solid piny hop aroma. Big and bold rye flavor, toasty burnt gingerbread tones with a cool, crisp hop backbone. Rather bitter, somewhere between medium and full-bodied. Not unlike other new school Black IPAs, albeit more brown in color. A pretty nice beer, another quality "Unchained" venture.

Bottle: Pours a true amber with a large, sticky beige head. Lots of sheet lacing. Aroma is floral, caramel, and the rye. Taste is very similar. Nice balance of florals, rye, citrus, and sort of peppery. Tastey.

Big thanks to probiere for this sample. Pour is brownish yellow with some brown and a rocky head. Friendly yeasty aroma. Not a whole lotta carbonation on the palate even tho it foams allot on the pour. Bitter initial flavors that kick. Lots of personality. Almost on style for an IPA, which it is not. Quite strong territory. Long bitter malty medicinal alky finish. Seems much more than the 5.7% listed here.

Dry, leafy, semi-bitter and vegetal - there is nothing terribly stand out about this beer, and there are several discernible flaws (outside of the dms), which is pretty hard to do in an ipa - the hop flavor is earthy and tasty, which is this beers saving grace, but this is a bit messy, even for an ipa.

12oz bottle at the DC Local tasting. Translucent copper, brown body, wispy white head. Nice, inviting aroma, caramel, a little peat, cookie dough. Sweet, sugary aroma, caramel, chocolate, root beer. Full bodied, sweet finish.
