About
Shock Top is a traditional Belgian-Style wheat ale. It was originally created in 2006 as a seasonal brew under the name Spring Heat Spiced Wheat. After collecting gold in ’06 and bronze in ’07 in the Belgian White category at the North American Beer Awards, we decided to brew year-round and switch the name to Shock Top. We couldn’t be happier with our decision. And the best decision you can make is to try some Shock Top for yourself.

Bottle: Pale yellow color with a bit of white head. Lemony, both in taste and smell. Actually a good, fresh lemon presence. A little thin, but OK. Has it been called cheerleader beer yet?

12-pack in Vermont. Pours a slight hazed golgen colour with a white cap, average retention and mild dirty lace. Sweet nose with lots of fake vanilla. Pretty much the same for the taste with mild honey sweetness, light caramel malt, hints of chocolate and vanilla that lingers. Interesting overall, but not much of burbon. Does get heavy on the stomach eventually.

12 ounce bottle. I fear this. Pours a hazy amber color with a thin fizzy white head. Decent head retention. Odd aroma... apples, wood, raisins, nougat, vanilla, sawdust. I guess they’re hinting at some bourbon there. All they got was sweet. The taste is tart apples, wheat, vanilla, caramel. Again, way too sweet. Thin bodied, sickly sweet, disjointed, all over the place and doesn’t come even close to what it promises to be. Probably the worst of the Shock Top beers. Just awful. Drain pour.

Poured from 12 fl oz bottle. Cloudy, pale yellow with dissipating white head. Light wheat nose with minimal coriander and citrus. Has the same tastes, but very muted, tastes like it was added after the fact to a lager.

Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours very hazy orange tinge gold with a transient white head. Aroma starts light bourbon then gets honey. Med minus body. Flavor is very mixed, but there is definite bourbon vanilla, honey and arguably some hop. The effect is that of a very floral/perfume situation. Very unusual. Drinkable.

Location: 12 oz bottle from a random store near the Grand Canyon, 3/5/14

Aroma: Nose of sweet chocolate malts, not too much else, but still nice enough
Appearance: It pours a brown color with a small beige head and some light lace
Flavor: The taste is very sweet, almost a chocolate soda-like flavor to it
Palate: The body is creamy, it has a plus carbonation, it is only mildly cloying on the mouth
Overall Impression: Better than I expected from Shock Top. Sweet chocolate flavor and aroma. Kind of a Sam Smith Chocolate Stout Jr., but also kind of not.
