Description
Established in 2015, co-founders, veterinary orthopedic surgeons, and seasoned brewers Sean Wells and Tim Sellmeyer, as well as their best friend and professional musician John Schuman, opened Gilman Brewing’s production brewery and taproom on the bustling Gilman Street in West Berkeley. Situated next door to the historic non-profit music venue 924 Gilman, Gilman Brewing Company brews beers with distinction for California craft beer fans while having loads of fun along the way. With almost 40 years of brewing experience between them, Sean and Tim found a common love for the nuanced, complex flavors of Belgian Farmhouse ales.

Together, the three friends transformed an old automotive repair shop with their own hands into the Berkeley brewery so many people enjoy today. They are a hands-on crew; no fancy suits or outside investors here. They build it themselves and fix it when it breaks…turns out they also love breaking things – especially common misconceptions about one of their favorite beer styles: saisons!

Can from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours clear bright gold with a white head. Aroma seems nectarine - not overly ripe for sure. Med body or approaching. Flavor is dryish, almost tart. Nectarine, but not all that ripe. Some yeast. Mildly funky. Very. Actually rather refreshing.

Can from Corti Bros. Pours slightly translucent gold with a huge white head that turned quite frothy. Aroma is slightly sour, has yeast/spice and enough pineapple to penetrate the head. Med body or nearly. Flavor is moderately sour; pineapple/astringent. A bit of malt in support. Very approachable sour. Refreshing.

Poured from a 16 oz can dated April 2, 2019. Aroma is hop forward with nice fruity notes of mango, passion fruit, melon and stone fruit. Some citrus with light pine and r sin notes. Light cracker malt notes and a hint of alcohol. Pours a slightly hazy, light golden color with a medium sized, thick, white head that recedes to a small film that lingers thicker on the edges. Medium lacing and faint legs. Flavor is somewhat sweet with light cracker malt notes and a moderately strong bitterness. Moderately fruity hop notes with mango, passion fruit, tangerine, grapefruit, pine and resin. Faint alcohol notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice IPA. Solid fruity hop notes with a nice, light but present malt backbone. Not as fruity as a NEIPA but not as assertively bitter as a West Coast one. I like this beer quite a bit and I bet it was even better a month ago. I was just wondering the other day why brewers moved away from Amarillo; I really enjoy the hop.

Can from Corti Bros. Pours hazy dirty/orange with a foamy off-white head. Aroma is lightly tropical. Med body. Flavor is lightly spicy citrus/mango/pine. Fruitily undry. Nicely/non-harshly hoppy. Bitter enough for me. Spice note (or passion fruit?) persists into the finish. Nice.

Can from Corti Bros. Pours light copper with a near white head. Aroma is bready with grapefruit. Med body or a little more. Flavor is grapefruit, not quite zest (but close), with some lightly roasty malt support. Pretty dry; decently hoppy; bitter enough for me. Old school on steroids – lacking burning harshness.

Can from Corti Bros. Pours translucent amber gold with a white head. Mixed fruit aroma. Berries? Grapefruit? Med body at least. Flavor is fairly dry and quite bitter. Grapefruit zest, mixed red berries and melon and likely many other flavors. It has slightly roasty malt, but sugar isn't in this - it is actually quite astringent. Ale for hop and bitter lovers.
