Description
The Brauhaus Gusswerk is an innovative symbiosis of a beer bar and a brewery, a place for enjoyment, communication and cosiness. The initiator of this unique project is Salzburg's Reinhold Barta, passionate brewer. After more than ten years of organic brewing experience he realized his organic brewery in Salzburg's “Gusswerk” in 2007. Reinhold Barta's goal is to make sustainable and biodynamic beer in Austria socially acceptable. When he saw the plans of the "Gusswerk", he immediately knew: "This is where my brewery belongs." The beer should be drawn from the strength of its origin, of course with purely organic ingredients and old, natural manufacturing processes that reflect the circle of nature.

Sampled @ the Elsenwang brewpub. Big thanks to Helena and Hübert for driving us here! Head fast gone; red-shot brown beer. Liqueurish, red fruit. Or better: red fruitliqueur. Alcohol obvious in the nose. Again syrupy-liqueurish. Bitter grapes, but decent amount of sugar too, albeit masked. Sticky, viscous, syrupy. Not very carbonated. I suppose nobody quaffs Doppelbock, but this is more liqueur than beer.

Sampled @ the Elsenwang brewpub. Big thanks to Helena and Hübert for driving us here! Very dense, utterly stable cream-brown head over jet-black beer. Liquorice, blue grapes, roast, but suggesting quite some sweetness. Liquorice; a light, almost fruity sweetness, ashes, wood. Bit sticky, well-bodied, viscous; good carbonation. It is a bit unidimensional IMHO, but to Austrian standards probably revolutionary.

Bottle, 0.33l. Cloudy amber/copper pour, one finger frothy off-white head, long lasting, minimal lacing on the glass. Nice on the nose, caramel, bread, herbal and floral notes.

Medium body, soft to medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel and texture, soft and chewy, easily drinkable. Nicely balanced taste, sweet with subtle bitter and peppery notes. Aroma of bread, grass, grains. Caramel malt, spice, peppery. Yeasty notes in the background. Short lasting finish, sticky, bready, slightly dry. Lingering yeasty notes.

Smooth and refreshing.

I was wondering about the story in the commercial deScription but I think is just for marketing purposes.Maria Theresa reigned for 40 years between 1740 and 1780 .The Nicobar islands were colonized by Denmark during that time but never continually due to tropical diseases outbreaks. There was in fact a claim by the Triestiner Ostindischen Handelskompanie in the name of the Austrian-Hungarian empire . And there is an island called Maria Theresa in that archipelago. On July 12th of 1778 they signed a treaty with the natives and colonized the island. The colonizers never received logistical support from the empire including food or water, so I doubt that they were receiving good mighty beer. Still a nice story, though.

Buying it at the Frastanzer brauerei, august 2024. Best before 11/24, opening it yesterday, at Epalinges with my wife. Beautiful body, classical red ale, malty and smooth for the style, touch of freshness, light, light bitterness, a bit watery.
