Sampled on draft at the Map Room at Regent Square this beer poured a chestnut color with a large dark tan head. The aroma was roasty, bitter and had faint elements of fruit, smoke, caramel and toffee. The finish was dry, smoky and roasty. Very complex yet something just did not work for me with this one. Interesting though.

Probably my favorite beer from this brewer so far. Sampled on draft at the Map Room at Regent Square this beer poured a murky golden-tan color with a medium sized tan head. The aroma was spicy, bready and had a moderate floral hop presence. The flavor was yeasty, wheaty, bready and very robust in body with a strong malt background to go with the light fruity and floral hops. There was a nice banana undertone. Wonderfully well balanced!

I got a glass of this on tap at the brewery while I was getting a growler of it filled for jjpm74. Scott the owner of east end, is simply just great, he was pouring!. This one glass had to be the beer tasting experience of the year for me. Scott said this keg, that he just tapped, was just finished brewing today. I don’t know what that means in brewery talk but I think it meant it was really fresh! This stuff poured like a quality wheat brew, hazy, cloudy and slightly vanilla orange in color. Off white head that fades rapidly. The aroma is something to behold, the smell of cooked homemade bread prevails. This is not like yeasty uncooked rising bread dough that is so common with other brews, this had the aroma of baked bread. The taste is like a wheat beer but more intense, more quality is present to the taste buds. Flavors of bready and earthly tones along with some barnyard flavors that must be experienced to be believed. Hints of freshly cut hay. Absolutely no hint of alcohol what so ever. The Perfect session brew. Has a decent medium carbonation on the palate. Finish is nice with gentleman manners that can only be matched with good wheat brews. This beer is a must taste for beer aficionados. Overall, a great beer tasting experience, will not hesitate to do this one again.

If this is a Scottish Ale, this is great, because I have not had an SA that has rated above a 2. Much more refined than the everyday scott. Do you know what a Mashie is? Well it tastes and smells like a little bit of mashie shaft has been ground up and used to spice this brew. Smells and tastes like a mashie, even feels the same way in my hand. This was on tap at the Bocktown, excellent beer tasting venue. The pour is a little perfumy aroma and just plain beer. Cloudy and dark but not black. Even cloudier and lighter than rootbeer. Looks more like a good duneklweizen. When I taste, I think ‘why are you trying to please such a small critical niche of tasters’. This has no attributes of impy stout, and neither does it have any characteristics of IPA? Tastes and feels like the dirt that has been thrown up in a fairway when using a mashie. Hey, how did this divot get into my mouth? Not sweet and not bitter. Could be a session brew if it is not hiding a high alky content. No alky hints prevalent. Interesting, woody but not burned or charred wood. Like fresh green hickory trees broken open from a lightning or wind storm . Mild, nice and friendly. Medium low carbonation. Must be tried to appreciate, my words lack description. Interesting and better than just OK, for a beer. Good for a variety. Finish is fun and happy. No bitter medicinal qualities. Another very distinct flavor from East End. IMHO the best and most behaved Scottish ale in it’s category so far.

On tap at the Bocktown. I’m not much one for hopped brews even tho wheat is one of my favorites so I not sure what to expect here. Pour is like a slightly hazy wheat beer. Aroma is floral hops, not wheatlike. Nice head that is creamy with mixed size bubbles. Interesting mild hop flavor. Not a real hard hop impact, the wheat seems to be combining with the hops to make it more palatable. The hops do override the friendly wheat flavors to an extent. Hop and wheat is an odd combination on my tongue. I’m not sure of it’s purpose. Is it to be something different or are we trying to attract pale ale lovers to wheat? Finish is mild to medium hop bitterness that hangs for a while after the last drink. This comes across somewhat like a mild pale ale.

On tap at the Bocktown, such a great place! Smells like the lemon scented fruit erasers we used to get in art class! Hints of sourness and lemon grass are also in the aroma, very interesting. Gorgeous hazy wheat or wit appearance, the only thing missing is the muck on the bottom of the bottle, but this is a tap! Spicey mild initial flavor, very friendly, I really like the attitude of this brew. A great example of a wit and this is brewed right in my own back yard, forget about Europe! Gentleman mannerisms, very good tingly carbonation on the back of my throat but not excessive. Refreshingly good beer. That sour smell just keeps kicking on thru the session. I think I can now also detect some grassy of haylike smells in there to! Very enjoyable and fun complexities with an evolution of flavors. I better get a growler of this stuff. Finish is pleasant and easy to like. If you enjoy wit beer you better seek this out. Great overall tasting experience, I think I’ll have another!

On tap at the Bocktown. This has a beautiful show for a pour. Once it is dispensed in to the glass there is a roll of foam that starts on the bottom and continues to the top. It takes about a minute for this stuff to settle. The appearance therefore starts out as a 5 and then settles to a 3. Don’t miss the pour of this, it is part of this beers enjoyment and fireworks. Darkish cloudy brew. Perfumy fruity aroma. The flavor starts off sweet and is more gentle and well behaved compared to many barley wines I’ve had in the past. At first it is much easier to palate. Mind you, I am not a fan of barley wine styles. There is very little detectable hoppyness, if any. The alky impact begins to build as each sip continues. Begins to come on like a liquor with all its high alky glory. There seems to be quite a fruityness to it. Wow, that back of the throat impact just keeps getting stronger. Quite an evolution of flavors. Wow, the impressive offense of this brew just keeps getting stronger, it will not quit! Although barley wine is not my style, this has got to be one of the higher rated ones on my list, it is acceptable to a point. Does not immediately mow over my girlie man taste buds, it takes a few minutes to do that and in the meantime, you can experience quite a development of flavors. I am almost ashamed to enter this rating because I know this is an excellent beer within it’s style. However, I am not experienced enough to rate within the style and therefore I rate as to how much I enjoy. In consolation, I must say tho, that this is the best barly wine I have had in recent memory. Scott, please frogive me for the numbers!

New rating: Had this on tap and from a growler, much better than I thought originally, has a more refined attitude and goes down oh so very nice - good job scott improving this brew! old rating: Oops, somebody at the Bocktown got this tap handle mixed up with Corsendonk, Corsendonk Pater (Abbey Brown Ale)-----Unbelievable bargain! Pleasantly flat. No, seriously, this is like Corsendonk with all the complexities, but much better in price. Definately top of the style.

On tap at the Sharp Edge Creekhouse in Pgh. The pour is pitch black or totally dark brown, very opaque. The head is darker tan. It fades to a thin froth after a few minutes. The aroma is that of a wonted stout or thick heavy porter, complex malt roastyness abounds throughout the olfactories. This beer looks great in the glass. Oh, yes, an aged roasted, nearly burned, wet wood or roasted flavor immediately greets the tongue. This can almost be classified as a stout and I am left wondering why it is not. Lovely enjoyable taste. A Coffee bitterness is well hidden within. One cannot say this is watered down as with many popular porters. Probably one of the most flavorful personalities I have ever tasted within a porter. The feel is smooth and heavy, like used shovelhead Harley Davidson oil would be if you could drink it. Medium to low carbonation. Extremely complex, a real contender in the porter arena. The lacing is beautifully prevalent and lasting, like the lingerie of your favorite female companion. Though this is borderline stoutlike, it lacks the medicinal bitterness on the uvula that is so common with strong stouts. It leaves a finish that is impressionable, yet does not have the lasting acrid linger. Friendly & enjoyable. This is a brew that must be experienced. If you are a stout or porter lover you better check into this. Pittsburghers rejoice!

East ends bitter end. On tap at the Bocktown Bar & Grill at the Robinson Twp shopping complex. Nice pour, it is orangish yellow and on the lighter side. Foamy with lots of large and fine bubbles mixed together. In the glass it has only the larger bubbles rising from the brew. The barmaid told me to start puckering even before I taste it. Has a starting flavor that is hoppy and nothing really offensive, initially not as bitter as I would have expected. But that is just the beginning, as it settles onto your palate the gentleman like nature goes awry. As time goes on, it gets more and more bitter until you cannot believe what has happened. Very interesting, never had such a brew with this impact. I think this is where the name comes from - bitter end. Not bitter at first but the end leaves you wanting a chaser of water. Very complex. The finish is a bitter astringent end that will just not go away. This is a must try if you are an IPA or imp stout lover. East end really has some beers with personality.
