Czech imperial stout shared by JorisPPattyn at RBBWG ’17. Thin, pale beige head, quickly gone in the middle, black core with chestnut brown edges. Aroma of leather, moist beef stock cubes, toffee, walnut, black bitter chocolate, coffee grounds, hazelnut shells, dried meat, dried plum, sweat, roasted coconut. ’Dried’ fruitiness in the onset, hinting at fig and raisins, sourish elderberry juice touch, quite spritzy carbo for the style but still smooth and supple mouthfeel, strong dried meat-like umami presence; toffeeish, nutty and eventually bitter chocolatey malt body, roasted bitterness in the finish along with a fair amount of palpable, wodka-like booze but a sweeter marzipan or ’frangipane’ impression as well, some bready yeastiness too. Nice, a tad too boozy perhaps but with an interesting play of sweet, bitter and umami. More and more of these new generation Czech beers seem to connect with their rich array of beery traditions and I have no doubt that many a fascinating beer is about to come from there in the future.

Good, dense yellowish head over clear golden-copper beer. Fruity, rosehips, but also vegetable frying oil, faintly sweetish. Sweetish taste, thick-feeling as from cornsyrup Hops with an artichoke, witloof note. Well-carbonated, slick, medium bodied. Feels lower bodied than its 22° Plato would suggest. Strange beer, but not bad. Dakujem, Peter!

Good beige head over deep redbrown beer. Caramel, black bread, bit of burnt wood. Cola, but with a rather bitterish-woody, also pharmaceutical taste; liquorice. Medium bodied at best, medium carbonation, bit sticky in the aftertaste. Not bad, but nowhere special. Dakujem, Peter!

Thank you JorisPPattyn! 700 ml. (says so on the label) bottle sampled @ RBBWG VI (2017). BBF 28-02-2017. Black, little tanned head. Nose is licorice, bitter herbal roots, roast, bark, low ashes. Bitter herbal, roast, plastic, licorice, bark, charcoal. Herbal, grainy licorice root. Not the biggest fan of these old school British bitter licorice stouts but this one is pretty solidly made. Not bad at all.

Thank you JorisPPattyn! 700 ml. (says so on the label) bottle sampled @ RBBWG VI (2017). BBF 27-02-2017. Orange, white head. Nose is weird bitter oily weeds, marmalade, sweet orange peel & oddly straight up endive. Taste is bitter orange peel mixed with big sugar, exotic sugar, marmalade, caramel, strange unfittingly sweet, bitterness is strange & there are endive notes. Thicker bodied. Just weird, not really what a DIPA should be.

Thank you JorisPPattyn! 700 ml. (says so on the label) bottle sampled @ RBBWG VI (2017). BBF 27-02-2017. Dark brown amber, little head. Nose is metallic, chemical thin chocolate, big plastic, unpleasant sweetness. Taste is roasted malt, lager thin with chemical chocolate, plastic, thin,... Body is same, thin, grainy chocolate lager, chocolate tastes chemical with plastic notes. Not a fan. The score is very high, I am not that familiar with the style. It appears to almost expired.
