Description
The Knoblach inn has been in Schammelsdorf since 1880 and it has been brewing there for about this long. Today Michael Knoblach is the resident master brewer. The Knoblachs are deeply rooted in their homeland and maintain good contact with regional suppliers and farmers. They attach great importance to preserving and actively promoting the diversity of the Bamberg region. For this purpose, the raw materials are, as far as possible, bought exclusively from the region. This not only has the advantage of boosting the domestic economy, but is also reflected in the quality. The ingredients couldn't be fresher.

Bottle from the brewery, poured into a Steinkrug. When pouring, it's clearly visible that this is much darker than your usual Märzen - basically dark amber / chestnut colored, with a large frothy beige head. Aroma is super earthy, chestnuts, bready, a touch roasted, super rustic, with a nice amount of herbal hops, cocoa powder, and burnt breadcrust, with an additional touch of Zwickel sulphur and berries. Taste is cappucino, tiramisu, earthy, leathery, chocolate, actually coffee-flavoured chocolate (which I love!), super rustic, herbal, with a solid bitter earthy finish, and also the right amount of Franconian juiciness to it. Extremely velvety mouthfeel with natural carbonation. A dream of a Christmas lager, it's super complex and super tasty - and has some flavours I've never experienced in a Lager. I'm serious, the tiramisu flavours in this one are stronger than in Tiramisu-themed pastry stouts, and it's not sweet at all.

Bottle. Slightly hazy orange chestnut, big frothy cappucino head. Fat fruity malt and grassy aroma. Medium body, chewy, mellow mouthfeel, light sparkles, dry on the palate. Roast, a hint chocolate, chalk, minerals, Broad juicy malt, grassy, herbal, light citric well-balanced hop notes which leave on a moreish bitter edge. Now this is a christmas beer!

(bottle) Clear, dark amber to brown colour with a firm and tanned mid-sized foamy head. Earthy dark malty aroma with notes of butterscotch, cacao and herbal hoppy spice. Sweet-bitter flavour, surprisingly light bodied with a modest carbonation. Dry-ish dark malty base with earthy and mineralic notes, caramel, bread crusts and herbal hops; mildly bitter hoppy and eatrthy malty finish with hints of chocolate in the slightly mineralic aftertaste. They know how to brew. 30.XI.17

(tap at the brewpub) Hazy, amber colour with a firm and minimally off-white foamy head. Slightly earthy and grainy malty aroma with subtle citric, as well as flowery and herbal hops. Bitter and slightly sweet flavour, light to medium bodied with a well-carbonated but not particularely “ungespundet” mf. Dry and earthy malt character with cereals, mineralic notes and very present herbal-spicy hops; lingering hop spicy and bitter finish with delicately citric notes. Very good. 25.XI.17

500ml bottle. Clear, dark amber-ish, ruby colour with average to huge, frothy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Grainy, strawy, minimally spicy, sweet-ish dark malty aroma, a touch of cocoa and chocolate. Taste is dry, dark malty, subtle sweetness, hints of milk chocolate and cocoa. Zwickel-Dunkel hybrid that doesn't fully work for me.
