Strange Ensemble Belgian style Strong Dark ale 8.5%
This was a deep matte reddish brown with thin fizzy beige foam and a rich malty aroma. Nice full body and great spiciness with cloves and raisins. Super smooth and drinkable.
Very clean delicious Belgian style dark ale.

I picked this up in Nara, at one of the taprooms.
Yamato Yuzu Story 5%
This beer is a matte straw gold with thick fluffy white foam. The aroma is white pepper and yuzu. Medium bodied but with an aggressive carbonation that prickles my tongue.
The taste is eggy sulfur, wheat, banana bread and yuzu. Tastes pretty good but the carbonation is just too much.

Tap at the brewpub. Hazy gold with a thick, low head. Nose is ginger, lemon, bready malts. Light malt flavor, ginger, citrus. No problems with this. Not super exciting, but easy drinking and tasty.

Bit weird and herbal. Something like black treacle in there too. Not the best but unique. Whether through design or mistake, not sure.

Good. Very roasty. Something a touch weird but fun. Lots of taste for the strength. Bitter chocolate

Nice aroma, taste is less exciting but it’s alright. Bit thin again. But decent saison yeastiness. Bubblegum. Kind of raw, but nice

Yamato Stout 4.5% After the last few average to slightly subpar beers I had today I wasn’t expecting much from this so the deep black with a thick tan head had me surprised. It’s a good looking beer. Roasty cacao aroma with a very full body and a roasty cacao, possibly oats with a slightly acrid/smoky finish being the only thing detracting from this being by far the best of the three.

Next I’m going for the bigger beer: Yamato IPA 8% Orange amber in color with a beige head and a big piney hop bouquet with loads of biscuit notes as well. Malty full body. This beer feels like a rye IPA with big biscuity caramel and pepper notes while it also has some simple piney hop flavors. Much fuller in body and ABV than most IPAs are these days.

I’m going to start with the Yamato PALE ALE 5% Matte copper with a thick light beige foam that lasts and a very subdued stone fruit aroma though I did grab it from my fridge without time to warm up much. Medium bodied with a bit of a raspy carbonation. The taste is sweet syrupy caramel wort tea with stone fruit. Not really hoppy and possibly underattenuated. This is like an APA I’d buy 10 years ago that was kind of meh, ok.
