Description

The tripel in this series of Alfred beers, made in honour of a former local brewery; bottle from Van Eetvelde in Lokeren. Thick, egg-white, frothy, creamy and stable head on a clear, warm ‘old gold’ coloured beer with fierce sparkling sustaining the head for a long time. Aroma of banana peel, sweet apple cider, bread dough, dried camomile, apple sauce, butter, green melon, coriander seed, old straw, dried out leek. Fruity onset, apple-ish with notes of banana and pear, sweetish with lightly souring, fizzy, lively carbonation; some lingering residual sweetness with honeyish effect over a clean, pale malt sweet, bit bready middle, slick and lean, with a soft finishing hop bitterness providing some camomile- and old leek-like aroma retronasally. The malt and residual sugary sweetishness, even if nothing cloying or obnoxious, does get the last word, with some minerally aspects to it. Sweetish, very accessible, proportionally quite ‘clean’ and technically well-made classic style Belgian tripel, nothing wrong with this, but nothing remarkable happening here either.

Beautiful warm and sunny afternoon in Brugge (15th May 2018). 33cl bottle drank in the rear garden area of the Bier Paleis. Thin white head on a clear golden yellow body. The nose carried some light fruity esters, mild herbal notes and a slice of doughy bread roll. The taste was more bitter than the aroma indicated, still some fruit, herbal and bread hints. Very pleasant in that afternoon sun.
