Dutch craft ’impy’, bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck. Medium thick, pale yellowish beige, well-retaining head, opening in the middle; black robe but burgundy (and misty) in its edges. Aroma of soggy coffee grounds, bitter chocolate, a lot of glue-like fusel alcohol, brown sugar, cloves, wet wood, ’jenever’, dried manure, shoe polish, leather, banana peel. Dried fruit sweetish onset with some umami and a dull basic sourishness underneath, softish carbo, smooth and oily, thick mouthfeel but not as creamy as expected from a 10% stout, nutty malt middle, very toasted and a tad (bitter) chocolatey, peppery hoppy touch, strong rum-like alcohol flirting with astringency (and, frankly, becoming a bit obnoxious in the end) as well as these solvent-like effects retronasally. Needs more body, less of the fusel alcohols and more creaminess, but the beginnings of a good stout are certainly there.

Clear dark brown beer, big creamy irregular beige head, stable. Aroma: lots of coffee, bit metallic, sweet notes. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body, smooth creamy texture. Taste: quite some coffee, lots of caramel, malty, pretty bitter. Aftertaste: alcohol, hoppy, coffee, sweet, some ripe banana, more coffee, and is that lactose? Or just my brain pulling a trick on me.

Bouteille 33cl, batch#5.

Bottle of almost half a year old. Deserves its name: very violent gusher, beer streaming out of the bottle neck no matter how careful I opened it, lost about 1/3 of the content - not a great start, obviously. Thick and rocky, egg-white, irregular head with thick patches of cobweb-like lacing, lightly hazy, pure amber colour with slightly coppery hue. Aroma of dried orange and grapefruit peel, soap, freshly grated ginger, some FFF (manure), sundried tomato, paprika powder, whisky, wood tannins and even some ’real’ moist wood (even though only wood chips have been used), dried peach, varnish-like solvent, horseradish, lemon balm, moist earth, sweet red curry, some stale sweat. Fruity onset, quite vivid with hints of green banana, grapefruit and apricot, more sourish than sweetish but quite balanced, quite sharply carbonated (not surprising seen the fierce gushing) and numbing a bit, smooth and resinous malt middle, bit caramelly with a toasted bitter edge that smoothly shifts to a hop bitter, long finish, making it feel even more resinous than it already is; soapy effect too, paired with a drying wood tannin effect that actually goes well with the spicy, earthy, almost Orval-like hop bitterness. Some warming ’jenever’-like alcohol as well but well placed, as a finishing touch, so to speak. Good idea, but not well executed; the amount of gushing is downright offensive and there are certain ’animalistic’ and manure-like traits in the nose that put me off a bit, hinting at bacterial infection which should not be there. Interesting beer from an abstract point of view, largely ruined by a debilitating infection.
