Cask at Greyhound. Stafford. Pours golden amber with a medium sized foamy off-white head and good lacing. There’s marmalade and malts in the aroma. In the mouth the strong bitterness is what hits immediately. It’s quite juicy with a creamy texture with traditional hops and sulphur also prominent. Hints of spices and mango too, leading to a very dry finish. This is rather nice – a classic Burton Ale with plenty of bite to it.

22/8/2024. Cask at the 32nd East Anglian Beer & Cider Festival. Pours clear pale amber with a small bubbly off-white head. Aroma is sweet malts, grainy, sweet fruits, butter, caramel. Quite heavy sweetness, light to moderate bitterness. Moderate body, slightly oily, soft carbonation. A little on the sweet side but quite liked it.

Cask at the Pup and Duckling, Solihull. Poured a clear dark brown colour with a reddish hue and a thin off white head. The aroma is light roasty malt, floral hops. The flavour is moderate liquorice bitter, with a light, watery, dry, roasty, big yeasty, light liquorice bitter palate medium to light bodied with soft carbonation.

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a slightly hazy dark copper with a medium sized foamy off-white head. Some malts and floral hops in the aroma. In the mouth it is slightly sweet and decidedly watery. Not much flavour to be found anywhere. Some slight hoppiness later on but that’s about it. Very disappointing.

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a sizeable frothy cream head. Roast malts are the mainstay of the aroma, plus a hint of lactose. Roasted malts again in the mouth where it is slightly sweet with s creamy texture and some liquorice flavour too. Fairly quickly the alcoholic strength becomes evident, and starts to dominate. Some traces of nuts and dried fruit too, leading to a boozy dry finish. This is quite nice, but a bit rough and ready.
