Varvar Brew

Microbrewery in Kyiv, Kyiv, Ukraine 🇺🇦

Description
It all has started with a dream. OK, let's be honest, it's started with a glass of beer. Brewed by someone else.

Dream big. Always dream big, you know. We started small because at the beginning the only thing we had was our dream. We haven't owned any equipment, so our first brews were born at other city and other mash tun entirely. But we took one step at the time and soon our very own, very handcrafted and assembled by hand brewery arrived from Bila Tserkva. We installed it here in Kyiv at the premises of the former lumber house – “lisopylka” in Ukrainian, hence the name of the brew-pub – and continued the pursuit of our dream.

Today we have new state-of-the-art brewery and immensely proud of it. Don't think that we discarded our small but utterly loved old brewing system, because we have, yes you've guessed, BIG plans for it. And we keep on dreaming big. We just want to share this dream of better beer, sheer enjoyment of the drink, greater and more diverse beer culture, share it with you.

750ml bottle (thx to Vasyl for giving it and Alex for bringing it to Vancouver) at Matt’s. Pours a very dark brown with a brown head. Aroma is fruity with roasted malt and some seeds notes, slightly smokey and grassy. Taste is pretty the same. Body is huge. Quite good stuff.

750mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out roasted malt and soy sauce. Flavour is heavy on the soy sauce, with a little anise, and cocoa. Finishes on the soy sauce. Silky palate. Nothing special, but it's solid. A little flat, but it's okay.

Bottle, thanks Sergiy! Dark brown. Not much head. On the nose, some vaguely chocolatey notes, a touch of nuttiness, and some dark fruits. On the palate, some dark fruits, and a hint of nuttiness. A bit of tartness. It ends up a bit thin. Overall, the fruity character isn’t bad, reminds me more of a Baltic in its raisiny note and general lightness. It’s ok - prefer them richer and hoppier but what can you do?
