Released last week for the Kentucky Derby - aged in whiskey barrels with mint and some other adjuncts - this is the second barrel-aged, adjunct-laden iteration of this beer - it makes me wonder if they thought the base beer was as bad as I thought it was - anyway - this has a moderate toasty oakiness and vanilla from the barrels - the mint is very strong, which would not be bad if it did, for some inexplicable reason, combine with the vanilla notes and other qualities of the beer to make this taste quite a lot like toothpaste - "toothpaste-flavored barleywine," they should call this - some toasted coconut in the finish, but yea, it tastes strongly of toothpaste - meh, bordering on ick.

Tap at the brewery - light gold with a slight haze - nose starts out somewhat.promising, with some grassy, herbal euro hop character, light spiciness, some apple esters - there is some slight banana, but this does a fair job in the nose of minimizing the sweetness, booziness, and heavy banana that plagues so many american examples of the style - has a nice full.frothiness in the mouth - the flavor is fairly sweet, though, with some vanilla and honey - however, it is at least a clean sweetness that is not too heavy or sticky - notes of apples are complimented by a light acidity through the middle - a mixture of some spiciness and moderately herbal hops - some spicy tettnag punchiness in the finish, some white pepper - the tail end has some lingering white frosting kind of sweetness to it - overall, a decent american effort that avoids being a banana bomb, but it’s still a bit too sweet.

Tap at the brewery - mostly clear light gold - fairly simple, clean, and refreshing beer - moderate sweet notes of honeysuckle and melon, with balancing floral hops, some punchy cascades and herbal, almost minty mosaic - wheat gives it a nice creamy fullness to the mouth - fairly crisp finish - a nice warm weather quaffer - too bad it’s snowing right now.

Tap at the brewery - black pour - sweet aroma of anise/licorice, dark chocolate, with balancing roast and a touch of smoke - slick, almost oily texture - there is a base of earthy, dry, almost whiskey-ish golden promise character, which adds a nice dimension to the more traditional, sweet notes of raisin, anise, and chocolate - mild acidity on the finish cuts the sweetness a bit - another solid offering from this brewery.

Clear light amber - certainly sweeter and a bit more simplistic than their other ipas, but this is actual to the benefit of the beer, as it becomes an excellent showcase of the hops - aroma is bursting with tangy citrus (grapefruit, orange), which the sweet malts add a nice balance to - the flavor is the same - simple, clean, medium-high sweetness serves to balance the strong citrusy tang of the hops - simple but delicious - I’ve enjoyed pretty much every IPA I have had here.

Tap at the brewery - I am not a fan of the base beer, but this is quite interesting - it has the honey and lemon character, as well as the light alcohol warmth you expect from a hot toddy - the clove and cinnamon come on strong late, complimenting the overall warming character well - I actually would live to try this still and mulled, as I think it would be much more interesting warm - some light vanilla from the barrel late, as well as some maraschino cherry maltiness - quite interesting - a beer to drink to chase away an early cold.

Tap at the brewery - pours a hazy copper - nice creamy texture and soft carbonation gives this a much fuller mouthfeel than you’d expect for fhe abv, but it is still light and quaffable - dry, earthy malts and a light bready character serve as a nice mild base to showcase the hops, which are quite.fruity (not citric, more like apples and cherries) and a little go grassy - nice session ale.
