Scotch Limited Edition 9%. Dark brown, beige foam. Nose of dried fruit, plus, raisins. A bit Woody with sweet caramel hints. Very well balanced, I like this!

Scotch enjoyed relatively widespread popularity in Belgium decades ago, when it was already 'belgicized' and diverged from the original wee heavy - and though I maintain that many traditional Belgium Christmas beers are Scotch-inspired, it is good to see this now oft-neglected style pop up again every now and then, in this case from a young microbrewery in the Liège province. Medium sized, moussey, slowly breaking, pale greyish beige, shred-lacing head over a clear chocolate brown beer with ruddy-red glow. Aroma of dried fig, medlar, dry caramel, toast, beef stock, tea, bayleaf, hints of moist white pepper, gravy, gingerbread. Sweetish onset, dried fig, some pear and baked banana, medium to softish carb, quite full-bodied with smooth, rounded mouthfeel; dry-caramelly, brown-bready core with clear toasty bitterish edge in its wake, assisted by well-dosed herbal hoppiness and warming yet undisturbing, gin-like alcohol; traces of beef stock-like umami, earthy and notably spicy yeastiness and bittersweet dark maltiness lingering. Bit overly yeasty-spicy and earthy perhaps for this style, with just a bit too much protein-induced umami, but generally quite pungent, solidly constructed and tasty - this certainly qualifies as a typical oldskool Belgian style Scotch for me. Not bad at all.
