Description
In mythology, literature and many cultures, the Raven is seen as a culture hero, a revered and benevolent, transformative figure. The Raven helps people, blesses them with gifts and shapes the world. But at the same time, he is a frivolous trickster, a light-hearted prankster who is sometime gluttonous and impatient. The Raven as our totem works perfectly. We like to think we are creative, wise, playful and a bit bird-brained; just like those wacky Ravens.

Draft 12 oz pour at Black Raven, Redmond. Had this several weeks ago, but was too distracted by nacho goodness to actually pay attention to the beer. Round 2. Fight! A dirty orange pour with a ton of foam head. Cool, spices aroma on this. Coriander? Flavor is cool, floral hops, a ton of mixed spices. Simple beer to drink. Full of flavor in a light beer, which is always pleasant. Malt notes get heavier late. Caramel, earthy malt, with the cool linger. I surprisingly different experience with this the second time around, but I like it better now that I really look at it. Iβd happily fill a full growler of this, and making it the only act of the day.

Draft, 7 oz pour at Black Raven, Redmond. Excited at the idea of a beer being named after my birth year, I was bummed to learn it has nothing to do with the year. I can pretend. Dark reddish brown pour with a thin, fading head. Black cherry aroma up front. A ton of barrel impression here, tart black cherry and a soft mixed berry. Acidic, and a tart remainder that lasts. Flavorful, and has a rough bite. Warming acidity. Very unique sour here. Not blown away with it, but an extremely fun try.

Black. Roasted malt and coffee with a big dose of earth notes. Medium malts. Dry throughout with minimal sweet notes. Not what I was expecting but not bad. A little dull.

Tap. Rather clear copper color with small tan head. Aroma is piney, hops, forest floor, toasted malts. Taste is forest floor, bitter, clean, bitter and dry finish - the bitterness is quite pronounced. Oily mouthfeel. Nice classic West Coast IPA.

Very dark with a beige head. Bourbon, oak, vanilla, dark fruit, candies brown sugar, and lightly toasted dough. Full bodied. Plenty of bourbon in the finish. Not as boozy as I thought. Very well done.

50th Black Raven rate! Better celebrate with bourbon and pie. And nachos of course. 14 oz pour at the brewery. A dark reddish brown with almost no head. Aroma is sweet and breast malt with a calm bourbon. Thick body, sweet dough malt, intense vanilla and bourbon. Late palate of a very true walnut, which is awesome. I missed their walnut barleywine from years passed, and have been hoping for a return, but if it never does, this is a solid consolation. I thought this beer would be too sweet. It tries to be, but there is way to much flavor going on for it to bother me. A fantastic warming feel to this beer. A dangerously delicious bourbon dessert beer here. Very nice.
