0,5 l bottle from Seiyu supermarket, Komazawa-daigaku, Tokyo. They have started to import some British ales and prices are quite reasonable. Pours dark amber with a small head that disappears fast. Aroma not too specific, some acidity, a bit of malts and something sweet and fruity. Taste - mainly bitter. Some bread maltiness spreads over mouth and leaves nice bitter-dry sensation. It does have flavour, although a bit too one-sided for my taste. Would be good to session it at a real English pub.

More like a Bitter than an IPA. Strangely I pick up some spice in the aroma, cinnamon. Otherwise lightly fruity, some digestive biscuit.

2012. Pale, transparent colour. Crisp, delicate, refreshing blend, not your typical Vintage at all. Very light tasting, you couldn’t convince me it was more than 4%. Normally I’d write off a cider like this, but Jonathan Blair has entranced me with this one.

500ml bottle. Pours amber with a thin head. Aroma is grassy malt and sweet citrus. Taste has sweet citrus. A little bready malt. Touch of skunk in the finish.

Bottle at Seiyu, as Gentleman JAMES. I suppose it must be that they Japanese don’t understand “Jack.” \298. Rather malty nose, some caramel, English hops, grass, some nuts. Dark amber-orange with a low, fine head. Sweet and malty, caramel and chocolate and nuts. Dry, grassy hops. Very dry finish. Clean. A rather typical bottled bitter, but good hops and nicely drinkable, and good for the price in Japan.

Bottle at the Seiyu supermarket, which, like ASDA, is also part of the Walmart Empire. \298. Floral, citrus hop nose, slight caramel malt, bread, cherries or grapes. Fruity, reasonably nice. Light amber-orange color, tall, fine head. Nice clean maltiness, somewhat sweet, fruity, good bitter finish. Full but not heavy. Enjoyable and well balanced. Great deal for the price of a Japanese major lager.

440ml can. This actually isn’t too bad, considering the ABV and price (£1 for 4 cans). Deep amber in colour with a thick cream head; malty aroma that isn’t too sickly; very thin in the mouth, but with a pleasant enough malty taste; and the faintest waft of hops to finish.

Opaque black beer, small tan head. Light dry palate. Mild dark malt with traces of roast and coffee. Some sweeter malt as well and a little bubblegum ester underneath. Dry finish with a bitter malt and hop snap. Too dry, but okay.
