Description
The Žatec (Saaz) region is famous worldwide for its unchallenged hops so it doesn't come as a surprise that brewing started way back in the Middle Ages. In 1261 the Society of Žatec Privileged Brewers was established. Close to the end of the 18th century, the Žatec breweries together were not able to cover the full market demand for beer so after 30 years of hesitation it was finally decided to build a new brewery in 1797 where brewing started in 1801. After the German occupation the brewery was nationalized. In 1995 reprivatisation took place and in 2014 the brewery was acquired by Carlsberg. Brewery closed in Spring 2022. A new microbrewery with new ownership started brewing, using its brands, in 2023.

bottle. Dark colour, large head, malty nose. Flavours of malt, roasted malt, slightly caramelly. Not sweet at all, quite hoppy, but not bitter - well-balanced brew.

(33 cl bottle at The Golden Days, Göteborg) Clear golden color, small white head. Fruity and bready scent. Fruity and full malty taste. A bit sweet and fruity aftertaste. Full mouthfeel. Higher bitterenss than many Czech beers I’ve tried. Fruity and thirst clenching, nice. A hint of vanilla in the taste when the beer gets warmer.

Bottle: Deep amber coloured with reddish sparks, huge rocky off-white head, slowly diminishing to a stable foamy layer; sweetish-caramelly, distinctive fruity nose with a tinge of molasses; sweetish-bitter flavour, soft MF, light bodied, not watery; light sweet-bitter-caramelly finish. A good and pleasant Dunkles..................

Bottle: deep golden coloured, small but lacing white head; sweet pale-malty nose with a taste of honey and a faint touch of aromatic Saaz hops; medium bodied, moderate sweet bitter flavour; sweetish, malty, honeyishj finish with a delicate bitterness. (Adopted from the defunct brewry of Litomerice/Leitmeritz and named after the baroness (baronka in czech language) Ulrike von Lewetzow, Goethe’s last platonic love, whom he met in the bohemian spa of Marienbad/Marianske Lazne......)

Bottle (Pivni Galerie Praha): Pours dark golden with a thin lacing white head; where’s the aroma ? Only traces of a bready nose, no hoppiness ; a quite bready, a bit sweetish taste ends in a slight bitter-malty finish. Zatec is the czech word for Saaz.....but here are nearly no traces of fine hops detectable. A disappointment !

Golden coloured, thin white fluffy head, quickly diminishing; bready nose, traces of caramel, cookies, some resin; malt/bread accented brew with some vegetable(?) notes, short bitter, not very aromatic aftertaste, quite light bodied; not unpleasant, but pretty disappointing, because Zatec/Saaz is the hometown of great hops. These hops are nearly not detectable........
