22 oz. bottle, pours a dark amber with a small tan head. Aroma is like a sherry, with caramel, dark fruits, boozy liqueurs and some wood. Flavour is quite sweet, with sweet sherry / brandy, caramel, candied sugar and some faint wood (though the barrels are not so pronounced in this aspect). A little cloying in sweetness, but quite solid. Actually enjoyed the original Human Blockhead more.

On tap at Fireworks in Arlington VA. Pours a clear, root beer brown with a thin, creamy white head. Nose has some fruity, booziness of a dopplebock with some lurking sweetness, caramel, vanilla etc from the barrel. The nose is not bad though. The flavor is where things start to go downhill. There’s just too much residual sugar. It’s cloying, overly malty like an imperial pils. The barrel is there with vanilla, caramel, but it’s over the crappy lager base and it just doesn’t mesh. A little hot too.

12 oz bottle purchased as part of a mix a six at Metcalf Discount on 91st in Overland Park, Kansas. Pour is a bright hazed red with a one inch pinkish white head. Head falls with loud crackling. I must be living under a rock, I had no idea this beer would be blood red and it really did surprise me. Aroma is honey sweet caramel malt, hay grassiness and a hint of pear fruit sweetness. The taste is sharply sweet caramel, sort of artificial tasting, followed by hay and finishing with the fruit sweetness and a hint of vanilla. Palate is medium bodied, highly carbonated, lingering honey sweet that cloys and dries out with alcohol. Rough all over.

From a 355ml bottle on 3/11/2011 (ABV listed as 7.2%). Pours a clear bubbly golden colour with a thick, big white head. Has a quite a strong aroma of citrus fruit, honey and bread. Has a big citrus fruit flavour (lemon and orange) with little caramel. This is balanced by an equally big and quite assertive grapefruity hop finish. Didn’t know quite what to expect from an IPA style lager but this is good stuff. It’s a little reminiscent of the old BrewDog Punk IPA. A good one for hop heads who are looking for something a bit different style wise.

Pours a hazed orange-gold color with a thin white head that dissipates steadily. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet malt, pineapple and piney hops. Medium body with a tropical fruit character and notes of yeast, malt and resiny hops. The finish is malty and fruity with a lingering sweetness. Decent overall.

This brew pours a clear yellow-gold color with a medium thin white head that dissipates steadily. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of grainy malt and fruit. Light body with flavors of bready malt, grain and lightly floral hops. The finish is sweet and malty. Pretty average overall.

Pours amber with a quickly fading head.Seems skunked, very grassy. Once that fades citrus becomes noticeable along with doughy wheat and ginger. Pretty soft.The ginger is really noticeable as a flavour, threatening to overwhelm everything else. There also seems to be some cinnamon as well as faint citrus.Carbonation is way to high.Too much ginger!

Pours dark amber with a large head.Nose shows toffee, caramel, bready malt and faint citrus.Similarly malty flavours, more caramel, bready malt, cardboard and soft toffee. Some spicy and piny hops are also present. Finishes with a sharp, slightly metallic bitterness.Carbonation could be a little lower.

Tomato and borshch aroma. Clear red, thin pink head. Grainy, sweet date flavor with vegetal overtones. Has the grainy malt house flavor that I’ve come to expect from Shmaltz. Unique obviously, but not enjoyable.

Pours amber with a large, lasting head.Nose shows lots of diacetyl, toffee, honey and faint bready malt. Not much in the way of hops. Smells more like a bitter than an IPA.Flavours include some hop character, mainly pine and grapefruit, pretty plain. The heavy malt and diacetyl remains. The finish is overwhelming with a sharp, aggressive bitterness that’s pretty abrasive.Could use more carbonation, body seems pretty syrupy.
