Beer #5 of 17 for each day of the 2018 Winter Olympics - One for A Country Participating in the Games: #5 - South Africa While not a powerhouse at the Winter Games, great to see they have competitors and makes me long for another trip to the amazing country. Deep dark brown coloured body with a thin, very fast-dying brown head that started at a centimetre tall that goes down to absolutely nothing. Aroma of roasted malt, raisins, figs, earth, light toffee, some peat and even a dose of coffee at the tail end. Medium-bodied; Assertive raisin, grape and prune flavours at first with a bigger dose of toasted and roasted malt, some earthier flavours and a touch of apples and pears near the end as well. Aftertaste shows some light grain, a touch of the toffee, some raisins and figs along with a subdued chocolate and coffee bitterness near the tail end. Overall, a decent porter with a touch too thin body and some decent but not assertive and especially not complex flavour profile, but nice for the country and especially considering some of the other offerings. I sampled this 50 cL tall/South African styled bottle purchased from Simon's Town Bottle Store in Simon's Town, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa on 13-August-2015 for ZAR35,99 sampled at home in Washington, just about halfway around the world during the 2018 Winter Olympics just about two and a half years later on 13-February-2018.

Clear light copper and bronze coloured body with a nice, three centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of grass, perfume, hay, yeast and a bit of bread - not too much here in the nose. Light-bodied; Very mellow flavour of perfume, must, mushrooms, light malt, bread and a lot of biscuits. Aftertaste is just as bland with only a touch of sweetness from caster sugar adding to the initial flavours at all. Overall, a pretty bland offering that isn’t bad by any means, but doesn’t show much and no hops are evident at all, plus there is no complexity at all throughout the flavour. Decent to try, but I wish I packed my bag with another one than this one or drank it on the other end of the world. I sampled this 440 mL bottle purchased at the Simon’s Town Bottle Shop in Simon’s Town, Western Cape, South Africa on 13-August-2015 for ZAR34,99 sampled at home on the other end of the world in Washington on 18-November-2016.
