Description
Welcome to West Avenue Cider. Where authenticity and tradition meet big city lights. Our cider has been awarded Best Cider in Ontario for several years running, and we hope you’ll have the chance to find out why. As small-batch producers of hard cider we care about the quality of the fruit that goes into our cider—and we always will. We only use the best ingredients, coupled with a slow fermentation process, so every batch of our cider is characteristic of the orchard’s terroir. Because heritage apples are rare in Canada, we planted thousands of trees in our Orchard to ensure that our Heritage Ciders remain authentic forever.

(On tap @ Bar Hop, Jan 11 2016) Pours very hazy pinkish orange with a small ring of white bubbles. Aroma is very funky sweaty Brett with some sulfurous decaying leaves and mulch, woody, tart crabapple type apples and a bit of sour cherry, slight sweet fruit. Flavour is lightly sweet and lightly tart with notes of sweet and tart apple, crabapple and montmorency type cherries. Finish is fairly dry with a touch of yeast and some slight wet mulchy funk. Tingly apples in the aftertaste. Medium body with light carb. Man, I like this - really nice funky fruity cider, a good substiute for a fruited farmhouse beer.

(On tap @ Bar Isabel, Toronto, Jan 13 2016) Pours clear straw gold with basically no head. Aroma of quite tart green apples, vinous with lots of oak bordering on buttery Chardonnay, some nice funky Brett characteristics of wet hay and earth, some leather. Flavour has a bright tart apple core, some skin, healthy amounts of oak with light vanilla, leather and tannin, lightly bitter and earthy, a little bit of decaying vegetation funk. Finish is reasonably crisp and nearly dry. Mouthfeel is moderate body and low carbonation. Very solid presence of oak and Brett, a good cider for food.

(Sample from 500ml bottle, Bar Isabel, Toronto, Jan 13 2016) Pours nearly clear pale pinkish orange with a small whitish head without lace. Aroma of tart apples, some sour cherry flesh, pretty fruity overall with some sweetness and a bit of almost lacto-like acidity from the fruit. Flavour echoes the nose, lightly sweet apples and cherries with some acidity. Fruit is mostly flesh with a bit of skin for balance. Pretty bright and crisp, mineral, cleansing. Finish and aftertaste fairly dry, fruity, bit of sweetness and tartness. Very little yeast. Light-medium body with effervescent carb. Not that complex, cherry not intense, good easy-drinking fruit cider.

(Sample on tap @ Bellwoods Brewery, Jan 7 2016) Pours clear straw gold with basically no head. Aroma of apple with some sweet floral honey, skin and some yeast with a hint of dusty funky character. Flavour is light to moderately sweet apple flesh, a bit of skin, tart and fairly crisp, a little floral honey that builds into a fairly big floral note on the finish. Fairly light in the mouth with moderate carbonation. There’s not massive excitement here, from a cidery that is much more creative than most, but it’s a good simple dry cider base.

(On tap @ Bar Hop Brewco, Jan 6 2016) Pours clear straw gold with basically no head. Aroma of heavy sweaty Brett with semisweet apples, a little white grape, dry wood, yeast is a bit dusty. Flavour is a little sweeter with Apple, slight orange, a bit of sweaty Brett, citrus acidity light in the finish. Semi dry and lightly tart. Light-medium body with very light carbonation. Would have liked it a bit drier to let the Brett shine on the palate, but a good cider/funk blend nonetheless.
