Description
The brewery is located in the picturesque village of Kötschach-Mauthen, Gailtal, Carinthia and derives its name from the old celtic name of Mauthen. Wonderful freshly brewed beer is celebrated here, with its own source, the best raw materials and a lot of love for the product. The brewhouse is modern and state of the art, the beer is traditionally fermented in the open fermentation tank. We are Gailtal's first brewery and have continued the craft that was practiced in Mauthen in 1700. Since opening in 2007, the brewery has been continuously expanded and the range expanded. Far from the mass products of the corporations, artisanal beer is produced here.

Very pale / white ale. Pours murky, with a bit of floating matter. Thin head. Coriander on the nose and lemon, not a lot of the orange peel mentioned. Lemony in the mouth, struggling to detect any contribution from the malts. Piny hoppiness, lingering bitterness. Ok, not that well balanced. Missing a bit of sweetness.

Completely clear, slightly deep copper coloured body, but no deep hues or anything close to brown at all, underneath a thin, just off-white head. Aroma of crisp malt, light grain, a dash of caramelised sugars, some yeast, bread and nuts without much else and nothing of real note. Light-bodied; Strong dry and biscuity flavours with some grain and earthiness along with a dash of nuts and caramelised sugars, but fairly mild and subdued and perhaps even more than I'd expect from the style. Aftertaste shows some crisp grain, a lot of earth, yeast, bread and a dry malty profile that doesn't give way to any hops and hardly any sweetness - this is soft and subdued throughout without any real complexities or pungency at all. Overall, a very dry, grainy and herbal beer without much character and what is there is soft and subdued, even for a Vienna, this is quite mild. This is the last I've seen from this brewery since I was actually in Wien, Austria and while this is the namesake (citysake) beer, this is sad, given how mild it actually is. I sampled this 50 cL can, from Day #12 of the Costco 2020 Advent Calendar, purchased from Costco in Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia sampled at my house here in Washington on 12-December-2020.

Really a pretty nice vienna. Possibly the first real actual Vienna I've had. More of a helles really, in aroma. Easy drinking with good flavour golden pour with good head. Crisp finish. Can from day 12 advent calendar.

Half liter can, 12/12/20, #12 from the 2020 Costco advent calendar. Hazy amber, large foamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of toasted grain. Taste is grain, caramel, hint of brown sugar. Medium bodied, could be crisper. OK.

Can from Tavour. Day 12 of the CostCo Advent box. Pours amber gold with a creamy off-white head. Aroma is light roast caramel with Saaz notes. Med body or so. Flavor is light toasted malt with some Saaz spice, and perhaps a bit of grass. Quite clean. Bitter enough. Tastes better than many Viennas I've had.
