Bottled, 11/19/13, 2011 vintage. Pours a hazy amber color with a thin ring of head. Aroma of dry apples, mild barnyard, hay, glue and vinous notes. The taste is sweet apples, tannic notes, mild must and vanilla. Medium bodied, good balance, soft carbonation. Nice cider.

Bottle from Astor Wines. 2011 stamped on the cork. Not a mushroom, so I was able to squirrel away the rest for later without trying to hunt down a surrogate cork.

Fluted tulip. Dark/dirty mellow yellow body. A spritz of life before going still.
Mild funk. Mostly yeast, apple skin, & hay upfront. Coarse, sharp, green fruit, ugly rubber.
Super yeasty, but taste starts off kind of juicy, moving towards bitter/acidic apples. Big carbonation. Vanillin & smokey plastic creep in. Soapy. Dry, with an incredibly calcified/chalky finish. Noticeable sufites.

Wasn’t terrible, but it was just a bit too ugly at times to be enjoyable.

Corked bottle from Le Comptoir du Terroir, Paris; vintage 2008, 2 years old
Hazy deep blond color; huge foam, reducing quickly; nice fine perlage, sustaining a thin head. Nice aroma of apples, apple skins, wood; it’s also citrusy, some magnesia. Dry cider, as promised; it has a good apple flavor, with a wood touch, and a good level of acidity; it has a light astringency, less than other French ciders, but enough to give it some character. Very good.

Corked bottle from Le Comptoir du Terroir, Paris; vintage 2008, 2 years old
The bottle was under a big pressure and the cork exploded loudly. It pours a very pale straw color, and there is no head retention. The aroma has a cheap fruit side (apples and steamed pears), but also a bit of the typical French cider character. The mouthfeel is lean and semi-dry, with medium-light fruit flavor. The final is short. Quite well made, but you can’t expect much from a perry.

Pours with just a little head and a foggy white colour. Nice aroma of pear perfume and hay notes. Taste is absolutely stunning- a variety of sweet and bitter pears combine with an excellent mouthfeel so that it literally evaporates on your tongue, leaving a light and soft taste of various pear tastes. Easily the best perry I’ve tried to date.

Very nice muddy yellow appearance, lots of earthy notes in the aroma. Taste is also complex and not at all sweet, hints of wood and cheese. Quite a good and unique cider from France’s Calvados region.
