Dark brown coloured body, slightly muddy with absolutely no movement and a very sterile, placid enviornment - not too exciting here. Aroma of cherries, oak, alcohol, vanilla, mushrooms, meat and a bit of coffee - also not too exciting in the nose. Medium-bodied; Deep roasty and chocolate flavours with a lot of coffee, some light cherry and sweetness comes through as well as a touch of lactic flavours near the end. Aftertaste is pleasant, a little bit complex and having a touch of spice and oak along with the coffee overtones and sweetness. Overall, not a good looking or smelling beer but the flavours and aftertaste try to redeem the beer, although this isn’t a great beer by any means. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Beer Baron in Livonia, Michigan for US$2.39 on 30-April-2011 sampled at home in Washington after having a family reunion from my family in Michigan on 06-August-2011.

On tap at MBGSF 2011. Pours an orange amber. Berry and caramel aroma. This has a caramel and berry flavor with touches of bourbon. I’m a fan of the original Jackhammer Old Ale, but I couldn’t really taste it much in here. Still it worked alright.

On tap at the Corner Brewery. Pours a hazy golden amber with a white head. Strong citrus aroma, lemon and orange, some pine. Flavor is again stuffed with citrus: grapefruit, lemon, and orange. Again a lot of pine also in there. Very juicy, fresh tasting. Great stuff.

On tap at the Corner Brewery. Pours a cloudy, yet bright amber with a white head. Pleasant berry and caramel aroma. Flavor is quite peaty with toffee and caramel, berry hints again. This is just a really good Scottish ale, very nice to drink. Great job.

I didn’t know this was so rare, but I’m happy to have sampled the whole of my bottle. Hazy deep copper coloured body with a nice off-white head that fades relatively fast with a bit of yeast sediment noticeable on the bottom. Aroma of sour cherries, tart raspberries, a touch of oak, some very minor malts and a good sweetness. Medium-bodied; Assertive sourness noticeable up front with cherries and raspberries both noticeable and a good tart puckering maltiness also around. Aftertaste shows a more well-rounded, complex note with some light malt, sweetness and more fruit flavours. Overall, a very nice representation of the style and a great beer to sample if you haven’t had the style much, especially from a brewery in the states, especially Michigan. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 28-April-2011 for US$15.99 sampled at home in Washington in celebration for my birthday past on 10-July-2011.

Muddy deep dark brown coloured body with a ruby glow and a thin, fast-dying tan head. Aroma of metal, malt, earth, cherries, grapes and a touch of oak. Medium-bodied; Pungent earthy, caramel and nutty flavours at first with a little sour touch a middle of the way through with some faint pit fruit and prune sweetness on the end with a little maple sugar as well. Aftertaste is a bit complex, but a lot of the flavours are muddied and showing either malt, nuts or earth. Overall, an interesting beer, but not amazing and not too great for the style - a bit off the pace, still nice to try, since it appears to have only a few ratings. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan for US$2.69 on 28-April-2011 sampled at home in Washington on the fourth of July, 2011 just after watching the fireworks.

12 oz bottle. Pours black with a small light tan head. On the aroma, it really does smell like chocolate fudge, also with some dark fruit. Flavor is much more led by roasty coffee, with some slightly sweet chocolate. The fudge didn’t quite make it all the way to the flavor, but it still turned out very well, even if not exactly as promised.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a very thin light brown head. Aroma of raisins, pit fruit, alcohol, prunes, nuts, malt and a touch of chocolate. Medium to Full-bodied; Deep chewy malt flavour with a lot of cereal and grain flavours, some light toffee and chocolate notes and a good prolonged sweetness from pit fruits, raisins and prunes. Aftertaste is a bit complex with some light spices at first, a touch of roasted malt and a good yeasty note with bread and a bitter spice toward the end. Overall, an interesting dubbel - a bit more potent than others (kind of on the way to a quad taste) but showing some good flavours and nice complexity. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Siciliano’s in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 06-November-2010 for US$2.19 sampled at home in Washington on 04-May-2011.

Another big thanks to Ditmier for sharing this. Pours grapefruit juice with weak white head. The aroma has muted notes of cotton, hay, spices, herbs and yeastiness. The taste is pretty smooth with some apples, tart un-ripe cherries, herbal notes, a modest level of tartness and slightly chalky yeasty notes left clinging to the inside of my mouth.
