Description
The Brewery of Saint Mars of the Desert was inspired by the earliest “craft breweries” of Europe: that first generation making beers in disused 19th century breweries with a pioneering spirit, unmoving passion and an almost avant-garde creativity. We relocated from America to the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire to make this dream a reality and haven’t looked back.
As a very small two-and-a-half person brewery, making world class beers and sharing them fresh with the public is about all we have time for. But who needs more than that?

Can at home, from HOTM online, 28/12/20. Black with a handsome tan covering that dissipates to a swirl and edgework over time. Nose is dark malts, mellow roast, spice, liquorice, charr, burnt toffee, trace of campfire. Taste comprises dark malts, hint of cacao, treacle toffee, light spice, smoked flavours, light campfire, dried fruits. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, light drying close. Solid flavoursome stout with a light smoky twist.

Can. Light haze on this gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Airy palate, semi dry, a good fine minerally crispness. Light malts but with a passable creamy sweetness. A nice juicy generic fruit vibe here, seems slightly Orchard fruits, so I am guessing that Calypso takes the lead. Unfortunately, proceedings are taken over by an aggressive bitterness that is also tangy. Pithy grapefruit and a slightly metallic twang. Dry finish. Nearly a good IPA but basic flaws as far as my tastes are concerned, which must be flawed of course. No chance this beer is hyped, no, none whatsoever...

Can at home, from HOTM online, 26/12/20. Hazed amber pour with a well presented egg shell white covering. Nose is stewed fruits, caramel, yeast esters, pears, straw, light sugar sprinkle. Taste comprises bitter fruit esters, yeast loaf, fruit loaf, toffee, light spice, hay bale. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a tangy fruit edge. Solid Dubbel ... carries a crisp bitterness throughout in terms of the fruit presence ... never gets too sweet or cloying like many of its contemporaries ... solid stuff!
