Description
The Brewery of Saint Mars of the Desert was inspired by the earliest “craft breweries” of Europe: that first generation making beers in disused 19th century breweries with a pioneering spirit, unmoving passion and an almost avant-garde creativity. We relocated from America to the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire to make this dream a reality and haven’t looked back.

As a very small two-and-a-half person brewery, making world class beers and sharing them fresh with the public is about all we have time for. But who needs more than that?

Tap, at the brewery. Nearly black. Thin, messy, leggy and viscous, beige head. Nose has fudgy chocolate. Cigar leaf. Soft smoke. Some coffee bean. Some vanilla. Taste is vinous, coffee bean bitter. Some milky coffee sweetness. Medium body. Pretty smooth. Fine carbonation. Lingering coffee bean, vine fruit bitterness to finish. Not sure the barrel ageing has added much depth of body, but it’s definitely given an extra layer of aroma.

Bottle, many thanks Tara! Hazy amber color with fluffy off-white head. Aroma is toffee, herbal hops, grapefruit and tangerines. Taste is toffee, grapefruit, butterscotch, a touch buttery. Velvety mouthfeel with low carbonation. Decent.

Can, many thanks Tara! Hazy yellow color with white head. Aroma is grassy, white wine, gooseberries, biscuity malts and milky yeasts. Taste is a bit grainy, milky, lemony, lots of juicy hops again, fruity finish with a touch white pepper. Juicy mouthfeel with medium carbonation. I like, but it's not very Saisony.

Type “Attercliffe” into RB and this is the only beer that comes up. Fancy that. Can, picked up at the brewery. Hazed, dirty gold. Fine, lacing, lasting white head. Nose has pithy citrus. That slightly overripe satsuma I had earlier today. Some fresh herb. Some flora. Clean and dry malts. Taste is pithy, oily, citrusy bitterness. Some sweetness on the lips. Medium body. Fine and bright carbonation. Lingering bitterness to finish. Hop drenched IPA. Great stuff.

Tap, at the brewery. Also in can, at home. Vibrant, pale gold. Thin and dense, lasting, semi lacing, white head. Nose has floral, herbal, spicy hop leaf. Lemony brett. Touch of sourdough. Touch of white grape. Taste is sweet and bready first off, with a tangy, tart, bretty, bright hop bitterness. Light to medium body. Some hop oiliness. Fine carbonation. Lingering hop and lemony brett bitterness to finish. I could happily (and just did) drink this all day.

Tap, at the brewery. Nearly black. Super sticky, lasting, lacing, viscous, tan head. Looks boss. Nose has fruity coffee bean. Vine fruit. Milky coffee. Dark chocolate malt. Bit of a malted milk biscuit thing going on. Taste is sweet and vinous, with a fairly deep, roast malt and coffee bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel. Fine carbonation. Medium to full body, without feeling the ABV by some way. Long, lingering bitterness to finish. Nice one. Could do lots of this.

Bottle, picked up at the brewery. Also had this on tap at the brewery. Light haze on a deep gold. Thin and dense, lasting, lightly lacing, white head. Nose has pale malt. Spicy hop leaf. Touch of pepper. Notes is sliced orange and peel. Taste is light sweet to begin, with a punchy, almost spicy bitterness. Light to medium body. Fine carbonation. Some oiliness. Lingering bitterness to finish. Showcases the Mandarina well.

Bottle, picked up at the brewery. Also had this on tap at the brewery. Hazed, orange gold. Thin, dense swirl of white head. Nose has pale malt. Some sweet cereal. White pepper. Fresh hop leaf. Notes orange rind. Hint of stone fruit. Taste is light sweet, with a nicely balanced, fresh hop bitterness. Super clean on the palate. A little drying. Fine carbonation. Bitterness rises and lingers on the finish. Very sessionable without holding back on the bitterness. Nice one.
