About
The origins of the brewery can be traced back to 1797, with an inn and a grocer always mentioned. It has been family-owned since 1919. Today Günter and Rainer Wagner are responsible for the cool liquid from the keg, of which especially the Ungespundete Lagerbier has a cult status in Bamberg and the region. The brewery has an annual production of 17,000 hectoliters.

Gutes Bier! Test vom 28.1.2007, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 11,11,12,12,12,12 - 11,75

Bottle: Deep golden coloured, small, really stable and creamy head, visible carbonation; delicate honeyish sweet-malty nose with a bigger touch of hops and alcohol; moderate sweet-bitter flavour, medium bodied, creamy MF; sweet-bitter, almost a bit fruity finish with a light fresh hoppiness. Not too aromatic, but pleasant brew.........

Very light (?) ochre-amber beer, totally clear, under light amberish, small head. Oops - wet floor mop "aroma", then a cypress & soaparoma, but wafts of scouring suds keep coming up. Bit of caramel. Oops. Jesus wept - what’s up now? An extract of toasted peanuts, nearly scorched, diluted to the point of homeopathy, some caramel to hide the rest of the taste, and - I must be imagining things? - a soapy MF. Light, light for a Bock. If it weren’t for the caramel... A terrible let-down from this brewery I loved visiting that much. Bud Bock?

(Draught, "Bayrisch Anstich", at Akkurat, Stockholm, 6 Oct) Amber colour with firm white head. Malty, nutty nose with spices, orange peel, toffee and caramel. Malty, nutty taste with dried fruit (apricots, raisins), toffee and caramel. Metallic, earthy bitterness in the dry finish. The hoppy finish leaning slightly in the English direction. Very nice one.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 4 Oct) Pale amber colour, remarkably clear, with white frothy head. Malty nose with notes of caramel, toast and apricots. Full, malty taste with caramel, dark fruit and dark rye bread. Slightly sweet. Metallic, bitter finish. Medium to full body. Lots of character without straying too far from the middle of the road.

(bottle, from the brewery) Hazy, pale golden colour with a huge foamy, slightly off-white head. Strong banana and bubblegum notes with cloves and little wheat. Light-sweet flavour, light to medium body, medium carbonation. Malty, slightly wheaty taste with light banana esters; moderately dry, yeasty and spicy finish.

(bottle, from the brewery) Clear golden colour with a big foamy and slowly lacing white head. Slightly dusty and sweet malty aroma with dense notes of peppery spice and herbal hops. Sweet flavour, medium body, creamy mouthfeel. Soft malty taste, well-bound aromatic hops; medium-dry and lasting finish with a moderate bitterness. This one hasn´t an overpowering distinctive taste, but it is very elegant and balanced: a silent hero.

(bottle, from the brewery) Clear, deep golden to light-amber colour with a medium-sized foamy white head with nice lace. Moderately sweet malty, slightly toasted aroma with notes of citrus and a touch of herbal hops. Initially sweet and toast-malty taste with a honeyish fruitiness; medium-dry malty, slightly bitter and hoppy finish. Once again I prefer the counterpart brewed by Hummel.

(bottle, from the brewery) Clear, deep golden to amber colour with a very small foamy layer that lasts not more than 10 seconds. Slightly sweet malty, slightly grainy aroma with a shy fruitiness and a dense hoppy background. Light-bitter flavour, light to medium body, understandably low carbonation. Soft malty, slightly toasty and nutty taste with a touch of honey; dry, herbal hoppy and bitter finish. Decent Ungespundetes, but I prefer the Merkendorfer counterpart brewed by Hummel.
